UH Cullen College of Engineering: PROMES
About

Outreach

PROMES students engage in community outreach through a number of our sponsored events. UH-PROMES is a sponsor for the annual regional SECME Mousetrap Car Competition, the Gulf Coast Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) regional math and science competition, and the TAME Career Day. All of these events serve area middle and high school students and encourage their success in math and sciences. This year 20 of our UH minority engineering students are acting as mentors and tutors on a weekly basis to students from Wheatley High School in Houston's Fifth Ward district. We also partner closely with Chavez High School, a science and engineering magnet school. We are calling this program Step Forward. The program includes monthly weekend activity days in partnership with PROMES and the Step Forward mentors and faculty to foster academic success and to stimulate interest in engineering among the high school students.

PROMES faculty, staff and students provide summer engineering programs for high school students, many from underrepresented groups. The longest-running summer program in the Cullen College of Engineering is the Mentoring and Enrichment Seminar in Engineering Training (MESET), established soon after PROMES began in the late 1970's. With the help of state and corporate funding, this program provides a low-cost, residential, two-week campus engineering experience to 50 rising high school seniors each summer. In summer 2008 we will add a new two-week Step Forward Engineering Day Camp for rising 10th and 11th graders.

PROMES serves a critical function for the Cullen College of Engineering, the University of Houston, and the city of Houston in promoting engineering among area students. PROMES has a long and impressive history of supporting engineering students, building the pipeline for engineering, and changing lives one student at a time. Our success is shared by our generous corporate and private partners who have helped to sustain our activities through three decades. We continue to rely on funding through corporate partnerships and strong support from the Cullen College of Engineering. We look forward to your participation!
