Key research areas converge in new complex
UH is commemorating a “groundbreaking” step toward the future of collaborative research and high-tech classroom instruction. The Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex will be the only academic facility of its kind in Houston, where the pursuit of crucial cross-disciplinary research in a state-of-the-art structure will ultimately lead to breakthrough innovations.

International Karate Champion Merges Biomechanical Engineering with Martial Arts to Realize Goals
The martial arts recently world gathered in Limerick, Ireland for the 2003 World Championships, and Sandra Geffert took home multiple wins for the third consecutive year. Geffert, a second year engineering graduate student, competed in seven events and captured five medals, including silver medals in soft kata and musical kata, and bronze medals in team kata, team fighting and musical weapons.

Engineering Joins Forces with Writing Center for Capstone Design Course
Engineering is said to be the application of scientific and mathematical principles, but professors Rick Bannerot, Paul Ruchhoeft and Ross Kastor of the Capstone Design course realize the value of communication in engineering.

NSF Funds Outreach Education Programs at UH Cullen College of Engineering
Grants totaling nearly $2 million -- designed to retain and recruit engineering students and expose high school teachers to research -- were received this month by the UH Cullen College of Engineering from the National Science Foundation.

Student Uses Laser Vibrometer for Increased Precision in Measurement
Mechanical Engineering graduate student Ryan Link makes playful use of a laser pointer to illustrate the laser vibrometer research he is involved with under the tutelage of mechanical engineering professor David Zimmerman. The laser vibrometer, which ME acquired in July 2003, is used to measure the vibrations in solid objects in a non-contacting manner, therefore avoiding the use of sensors or accelerometers that alter the object.

Ostrofsky Wins Second Eccles Medal For Logistics Education
The Society of Logistics Engineers awarded Benjamin Ostrofsky, UH Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering, his second Eccles Medal at the society's 2003 International Symposium.

Engineering Makes Mark on 2003 Homecoming Court
Industrial engineering students Xavier Cano and Morolake Kuyeti have to hit the books just as hard as any student to achieve academic successes, but it is their colossal involvement in other campus activities that make them extraordinary Cougars. Cano was crowned homecoming king, and Kuyeti was honored with a nomination to the homecoming court.

IE Major Captures 'Engines of Our Ingenuity' Scholarship
While engineers with a background in elementary education are not ordinary or plentiful, the 2001 scholarship committee still named Rebecca Ginsburg as the first winner of the John Lienhard “Engines of Our Ingenuity” Scholarship Endowment. Ginsburg’s unique situation is one that corresponded with the scholarship committee’s quest for a creative thinker, and with a description of creativity shaped by John Lienhard, M.D. Anderson Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and History.
