$3.2 MILLION PROJECT TO DOCUMENT DIOXIN LEVELS IN HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL
(November 13, 2002) Since last summer, UH environmental engineers have been taking hundreds of water, fish and sediment samples from the Houston Ship Channel to determine what levels of dioxins, if any, are present. The scientists will use that data, and more gathered through spring 2003, to develop new computer models to find out where such contaminants originate and to track how they move through the environment. UH ENGINEERS HELP DEVELOP NASA'S NEW AEROSPACE INITIATIVE
(November 8, 2002) Imagine an airplane that morphs into different shapes, monitors its own structural health and even "heals" itself in mid-flight. That's the kind of futuristic vision UH engineers are working to fulfill as members of a new nationally funded research institute launched in October at Texas A&M University. Full story...

NEURO-ENGINEERING RESEARCH HITTING HIGH GEAR
(November 7, 2002) About 1 in 5 adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. That number is even greater when other forms of neurological disorders are taken into account. UH engineers are responding to the problem by crafting a new generation of diagnostic tools and devices to provide vastly improved treatments of mental illness and other neurological disorders. STUDENTS TEST CREATIVE SKILLS IN 'IMPROMPTU DESIGN COMPETITION'
(October 22, 2002) Thirteen interdisciplinary teams of UH engineering students showed up in the Engineering Commons on a Friday morning for an Impromptu Design Competition. This is part of a senior Capstone Design course required for three engineering undergraduate majors. Full story...
