Need Alumni Resumes for College's Accreditation Review
The UH Cullen College of Engineering needs your help! Every six years, ABET, the accrediting body for engineering education, reviews all aspects of the college's undergraduate academic programs. One component is showing how our graduates perform successfully in the modern world as engineers and have a sense of professional responsibility that will enable them to continue their professional development throughout their careers. You can help by sending your resume or CV with your name, major and class year at the top of the document to Janice Quiroz by August 31. Submissions will be rewarded with two tickets to the UH Homecoming game (UH vs. SMU on Nov. 12), courtesy of Dean Flumerfelt. For details, contact Janice Quiroz at 713-743-4215.

FE and PE/P&P Review Courses Offered at UH
Engineers planning to take state exams this October in preparation for obtaining their professional licenses can enroll in review courses offered by UH. The Cullen College of Engineering offers review courses to prepare engineers for the Fundamentals of Engineering and the Principles and Practice of Engineering exams. Registration deadline for each course is Aug. 10.

UH Engineering Research Claims Two TxDOT Awards for Innovation
UH Cullen College of Engineering professors claimed top research innovation awards from the Texas Department of Transportation. Civil and environmental engineering professors Todd Helwig and Reagan Herman with Ozgur Egilmez, a Ph.D. candidate, collaborated on a project to develop new, more effective and less expensive bridge construction methodology. Their research also received the Vinnakota Award from the Structural Stability Research Council. Electrical and computer engineering professor Richard Liu also received top honors for his research designed to measure the thickness of reinforced concrete pavement (pictured).

Neuro-Engineering, Vision Research Earn UH Professor NIH Appointment
Strides in vision research employing neuro-engineering and computational neuroscience earned one UH engineering professor a coveted spot in a National Institutes of Health peer review group. Haluk Ogmen, department chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering at UH, has been invited to serve as a member of the NIH Central Visual Processing Study Section, Center for Scientific Review.

BioE Student Wins Fellowship for Model of Human Vascular System
The American Society of Artificial Internal Organs recently awarded a $500 fellowship to UH biomedical engineering junior Hassan Khalil the research he has done with a model of the human vascular system. Though artificial organs have been in use for some time, Khalil’s model of the human vascular system will allow for new experimentation in artificial organ control.

ME Student Claims National NASA Fellowship
UH engineering student Sandy Geffert has been named one of 20 national recipients of the Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program from NASA. Geffert is a doctoral student in the mechanical engineering department, and has been working on NASA projects for several years with associate professor Stanley Kleis.

UH Sweeps IEEE Region V Conference For Second Consecutive Year
The UH student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) received high honors at the IEEE Region Five Conference. The organization won all four awards for which it was eligible—for the second consecutive year. Professor and advisor Ovidiu Crisan received the Outstanding Student Branch Counselor of the Year, professor David Jackson for the Outstanding Educator of the Year, Wahad Mehmood for Outstanding Student Member of the Year, and the student branch took home the award for Outstanding Large Student Branch of the Year.
