UH Students Place Second in Regional AIChE ChemE Car Competition
The smell of burning rubber, the roar of the crowd and the insatiable desire to win are all a part of racecar driving. While there is no pit crew for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Car Competition, the excitement is still there for chemical engineering majors Mansour AbdulBaki and Adrian Morales, the first UH students to ever enter the competition. AbdulBaki and Morales captured a second-place finish.

UH Sweeps IEEE Conference, Takes Home Seven Awards

The UH Cullen College of Engineering’s student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers received top billing at the recent IEEE Region Five Conference, garnering seven awards, including the honor of Best Large Student Branch.

Annual Tournament Raises Funds for Cullen College of Engineering
Approximately 100 golfers helped raise money to support the UH Cullen College of Engineering at the 15th Annual Engineering Golf Tournament on April 5 at Hearthstone Country Club.

Mohanty Receives Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award
UH chemical engineering professor Kishore Mohanty has been selected as the 2004 recipient of the Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award for distinguished contributions to scientific knowledge and its applications. The award, given by the Houston chapter of the organization, includes a $2,000 prize and he will give the Sigma Xi lecture this fall.

First Test Vehicle Arrives at College's Diesel Emissions Lab
The first City of Houston vehicle arrived for testing at the UH Cullen College of Engineering's new Diesel Emission Testing facility. Test results will enable the city to evaluate the effectiveness of various emissions systems as a part of its effort to comply with more rigorous air quality standards from the Environmental Protection Agency. UH Chemical Engineering Alumnus Lends Expertise to Small Entrepreneurial Businesses
Michael A. Ervin (1966 BSChE, 1969 MSChE, 1970 PhD ChE) began a 21-year tenure at DuPont in positions ranging from research engineer to vice president of R&D, and his journey took him to Europe and all across the United States. Now, Ervin, eager for a change of pace, has settled down in Austin, Texas, to get involved in a small company. He is chair of the Industrial Advisory Board for the UH Department of Chemical Engineering.

Helping Girl Engineers Make the GRADE
A camp custom-made for high school girls who aspire to one day become engineers, the GRADE Camp, hosted by the UH Cullen College of Engineering, is a weeklong day camp designed to introduce participants to the marvels of engineering. Nearly four dozen high school students from around the Houston area converged on campus for last year’s camp.

 

Engineering Alumnus Receives National Teaching Award
UH engineering alumnus Abdeldjelil “DJ” Belarbi received one of the country’s most prestigious national teaching awards when Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society, convenes its annual meeting at Purdue University.

Herrera, Bernatek Named Outstanding Senior, Junior
Senior Eduardo Herrera and junior Dorota Bernatek have been named this year’s Outstanding Senior and Junior at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. Both students were recognized at the Engineers Week Student Luncheon.

Engineering Student Performs at Super Bowl
Keith Stephens, a senior mechanical engineering student and member of the Cougar Marching Band, performed during the half-time performance at the Super Bowl at Reliant Stadium. Pictured practicing, Keith is from Baytown and currently works for Air Liquide part -time, where he's been offered a full-time position after graduation.
