Astronomy

The home-educated wife of an amateur astronomer publishes a set of astronomical tables simplifying Kepler's method for calculating the positions of the stars.

No. 221: Caroline Herschel
Caroline Herschel's brother rescued her from unsupportive parents by whisking her off to England, where they built a telescope and studied astronomy. Caroline became the first woman to discover a comet, and her brother discovered the planet Uranus.

No. 428: Maria Mitchell
A woman who discovered a new comet won America's first royal prize, the European equivalent to the Nobel Prize. The same woman became the first female member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was the first astronomy professor at Vassar College.
