Senior Projects Pack Benefit, Fun
(June 9, 2009) Students at the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering leave their mark in many ways throughout their academic career. One of the most significant impressions made on both their instructors and themselves happens in one of the last classes required before completing the course work necessary to earn their degrees—senior capstone design. Whether it was just a fun challenge or an assignment designed to impact industry, projects completed during the spring semester ran the gamut.

College Holds Annual Spring Commencement Ceremony
(May 18, 2009) On May 15, some 113 undergraduates and 100 graduate students participated in the UH Cullen College of Engineering spring commencement ceremony. Four Cullen College graduates—Tony Kim, Anne Schneider, Michael Fernandez and Drew Nolen—share their excitement about graduating from the University of Houston.

UH Robotics Teams Make History at Regional Competition
(April 23, 2009) UH Cullen College of Engineering robotics teams took first and third place at the 2009 IEEE Region 5 Technical, Professional and Student Conference robotics competition, marking the first time UH has grabbed two spots in the top three. Members from each team have toiled the last six months conceptualizing, designing, building and programing their robots for the annual competition.

UH Team Excels in Regional Circuit Design Competition
(April 22, 2009) A duo from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering relied on problem solving skills and classroom instruction to secure the first place title at a regional circuit design competition last weekend. John Hemmick and Osaid Shamsi, both seniors in the college’s department of electrical and computer engineering, were pitted against 10 teams in the nonstop, seven-hour competition challenging them to design and build a solar-powered battery charger at the 2009 IEEE Region 5 Technical, Professional and Student Conference.

IEEE Hosts 30th Annual Chili Cook Off
(March 13, 2009) The University of Houston Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student chapter held its 30th Annual Chili Cook Off March 12. Fueled by the support of seven corporate sponsors, the cook off provided students an opportunity for informal interaction with the companies present as well as helped to raise money for scholarships and the activities of the organization.

Undergraduate Students Construct Lab Instrument
(March 10, 2009) Undergraduate biomedical engineering students Arjun Vasan and Basilios Sideris demonstrate how to operate the lab instrument they developed over the course of the last year. Designed to allow scientists to better understand how radiation from low-level lasers affects cellular processes, the tool was repurposed from a 1970s era XY plotter.

Affecting Change: UH Engineering Students Aid Needy Hospitals Overseas
(February 24, 2009) Sick people thousands of miles away, in part, have University of Houston engineers to thank for the sterile syringes delivering their medicine and the donated ultrasound machines allowing them to see their babies for the first time. Through a partnership with Project Cure, a longtime nonprofit organization, the students from the UH Biomedical Engineering Society have worked to improve medical care in third world countries by better equipping health care providers overseas with the tools to fight disease.

EAA Hosts Fifth Annual Engineers Week Reception, Program
(February 23, 2009) Held in conjunction with National Engineers Week, the
Engineering Alumni Association's EWeek reception and program celebrated engineers and raised awareness about engineering's benefit to society. The event, which celebrated five years this year, has provided close to $100,000 to 170 students and five organizations in its history.

College Names Outstanding Engineering Students
(February 18, 2009) Students from two University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering departments were among those recognized at a luncheon on campus today honoring area engineering students’ high academic achievement. Hosted by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the event paid tribute to the college’s Outstanding Senior, Rodrigo Feliu (left) and Outstanding Junior, Joshua Kovitz, as well as the successes of other engineering students from Rice and Praire View A&M universities.

Alumni, Student Honored With Young Engineer of Year Award
(February 16, 2009) Current and former University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering students were among those named by area professional organizations recently as their 2009 Young Engineers of the Year. Kristin White (2007 MCE), Krishna P. Jonnalagadda (2003 MSEnvE) and David Bass, mechanical engineering senior, will be honored at a recognition dinner tonight as part of National Engineers Week.

Extreme Engineering: Student Captures First Place in Rigorous Competition
(December 16, 2008) Rehan Momin, a senior electrical engineering major, was among a group of students last month to win an intense 24-hour competition at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers national conference last month. Dubbed the “Extreme Engineering Challenge,” the competition challenged teams of students to design a water supply system for use in an impoverished country, testing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Students Demonstrate Curious Inventions During Presentation
(December 8, 2008) Teams of engineering students demonstrated curious inventions during the ENGI 1100 end of semester project presentations last week. Inspired by whimsical cartoonist Rube Goldberg, the project challenges students to design a machine capable of performing a simple task through a set of variable steps, giving students an opportunity to test their engineering and teamwork skills.

UH Engineering Students Reach Out to Help Hurricane Ike Victim
(October 17, 2008) Students from the college's organization, Women in Engineering-UH traveled to Bacliff to gut a home badly damaged by Hurricane Ike flood waters. The organization teamed with CORE Alliance, a group formed three years ago by two Houston-based churches to aid in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. Nine Cullen College of Engineering students participated in the outreach event.

Engineering Students Present at Undergraduate Research Day
(October 10, 2008) Ten engineering students showcased their research projects at the University of Houston's Undergraduate Research Day on Oct. 2. Students presented research on everything from developing tools for the treatment of cancer to the effects of cardiac stent placement. One student in particular—biomedical engineering senior Michael Leba—spent the summer researching in the college's Biomedical Optics Laboratory to determine whether there is a direct correlation between cornea thickness and changes in glucose concentrations.

UH Students Win Regional Concrete Canoe Competition for Second Year
(May 16, 2008) A team of University of Houston engineering students paddled their way to a second consecutive first place win April 28 at the Texas/Mexico Regional Concrete Canoe Competition.The students beat out 11 teams competing at Texas’ Corpus Christi Bay for the title, earning the chance to compete in the 2008 National Concrete Canoe Competition in Montreal, Canada on June 19.

UH Engineering Student Takes Home Top Regional Web Design Award
(May 13, 2008) Joshua Kovitz, a sophomore electrical engineering student, took home the first place award at the Region 5 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Student Branch Web Site Contest. As a first place winner, he will get a chance to compete in the international portion of the competition with students in six regions based in the U.S., as well as the four other international regions that include areas such as Asia, Africa and Europe.

NSBE Raises Education Awareness in Houston
(April 30, 2008) Members from chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers went door-to-door in an underprivileged neighborhood April 26 sharing information about education. Deemed, “A Walk for Education,” NSBE members and other volunteers spent much of the day passing out information on financial aid, both the ACT and SAT, scholarships and obtaining a GED.

UH Engineering Students Compete in Robotics Competition
(April 30, 2008) University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering students were recognized on April 19 for the design and performance of one of two robots entered in the 2008 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 5 Technical, Professional and Student Conference. The student robotics competition brought 30 teams to Kansas City to evaluate the lifting ability, motion control, color sensing, wireless communication and speed of each team’s autonomous robot.

Annual IEEE Chili Cook-Off Draws Large Crowd
(March 19, 2008) The aroma of award winning chili and the sounds of the latest music filled the air at the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UH Student Chapter’s 29th Annual Chili Cook-Off on March 13 outside of the
college's Y-Building. Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and corporate representatives congregated to participate in the pre-spring break festivities.

UH Students Win Regional Chem-E Car Competition
(March 18, 2008) A team of University of Houston chemical engineering students captured first place at the Chem-E Car Competition during the AiChE Regional Meeting on March 8. The purpose of the event is to provide an experimental exercise for students, while promoting teambuilding and regional competition. UH beat out teams from Lamar University, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Tech University, and will represent the region at the national competition this fall.

From Diabetes to Roller Coasters, Student Research Recognized at UH Contest
(January 30, 2008) UH mechanical engineering student Christina Chang was one of three students who showcased research at the 34th Semiannual Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston (TcSUH) Student Symposium. Under the direction Gangbing Song, associate professor of mechanical engineering, Chang is researching cost-effective manufacturing techniques for the production of nanocomposites in an effort to improve safety for airplanes and roller coasters.

Students Receive Energy Engineering Scholarships
(January 2, 2007) Four UH Cullen College of Engineering graduate students and one undergraduate student each received a $1,000 scholarship from the National Association of Energy Engineers Foundation. The University of Houston was second in the nation in the total number of recipients—and first in the state. The students are pursuing cutting-edge research in the areas of fuel cell, water quality and meta materials.

Engineering Undergrads Showcase Research
(October 15, 2007) Eleven engineering undergraduate students showcased their research at the University of Houston's third-annual Undergraduate Research Day on October 4. Among them, senior civil and environmental engineering major William Botkins presented the ups and downs of his watershed modeling research with Ted Cleveland, associate professor of envirnomental engineering, and hopes to continue investigating such topics in graduate school. Biomedical Engineering Student Conducts Research Overseas
(September 20, 2007) Austin Head, junior biomedical engineering student at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, was selected to participate in Rice University's NanoJapan program, a research intensive program funded by the National Science Foundation. Head was among 15 other students chosen nationwide to spend 11 weeks in Japan this summer researching the various aspects of nanotechnology. While there, the students toured Japan, giving them the opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture.

UH Concrete Canoe Team Headed to Nationals
(June 5, 2007) The University of Houston student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) took first place in the Texas/Mexico regional Concrete Canoe Competition in April, earning them the right to represent region at the upcoming national competition on June 14 in Seattle, Wash. In addition, the chapter received the 2007 ASCE Governor's Award for submitting an outstanding annual report highlighting chapter activities for the previous year. Those activities also earned them the Most Improved Chapter Award for the region, moving them from the lower third to the upper third of all schools in the country.

UH Engineering Students Take Second in Regional Design Competition
(March 6, 2007) A team of four freshman engineering students won second place in the Texas A&M Regional Engineering Conference (TREC) design competition in February. The design team from the PROMES section of ENGI 1100—Sheresa Burkey (CE), Crystal Ibarra (CE), Marie Politte (ME) and Mauricio Salto (CE)—beat out 25 teams from four other universities, including Kansas State University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University.

Cullen College Names Outstanding Students for 2006-2007
(February 19, 2007) The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering has named Phuc Huynh (ECE) and Alfonso Carmona (ChE) this year's most outstanding senior and junior student, respectively. The two will be honored at a luncheon hosted by the Texas Society of Engineering as part of the National Engineers Week activities. Twelve other outstanding junior and senior students are recognized by their respective programs. The entire list is published in this week's special edition of the Houston Business Journal, the 2007 Engineers Week Guide.

Mechanical Engineering Students Build Pumpkin-Launching Machines
(October 31, 2006) The Cullen College of Engineering student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers hosted its first-annual “Pumpkin Chunkin” contest on Oct. 27. The Halloween-inspired event featured devices built by teams of students launching pumpkins through the air and, eventually, crashing into a field. The teams competed to determine whose device launched pumpkins closest to targets placed at various distances from the machines.

Engineering Well Represented at Undergraduate Research Day
(October 30, 2006) Fifteen students from the Cullen College of Engineering gave poster presentations outlining the research they conducted over the summer during the University of Houston’s recent Undergraduate Research Day. The event featured students who participated in the university’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program. Under the program, fellowship recipients are given a $2,800 stipend to conduct research for ten weeks during the summer under the supervision of a university faculty member. Cullen College had more fellowship recipients than any other degree-granting college at the University this year.

Graduate Student Receives Fellowship for Work in Water Purification
(July 27, 2006) Archana Venkataramanan, an environmental engineering graduate student with the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, received a $5,000 fellowship from the Ivanhoe Foundation for her research on drinking water purification. The fellowship will fund her research with Environmental Engineering Professor Dennis Clifford on a new, innovative method of removing viruses from drinking water called electrocoagulation microfiltration.

Engineering Graduate Student Attends Discovery Shuttle Launch
(July 21, 2006) Mechanical engineering graduate student Sandra Geffert attended the July 4 launch of the space shuttle Discovery as an invited guest of NASA Assistant Administrator for Education John M. Hairston, Jr. Geffert is a recipient of a NASA Harriet G. Jenkins fellowship, which provides funding to members of underrepresented groups attending graduate school. Recipients’ graduate studies must focus on NASA-related projects in science, technology or education. As part of her graduate research, Geffert is creating a space bioreactor with a capacity of about one milliliter. The reactor will be used to culture cells, enabling NASA scientists to study the effects of microgravity, radiation and other stressors on these cells.

Engineering Graduate Student Takes First Place in Poster Competition
(May 16, 2006) Liang Xu, a chemical engineering Ph.D. student, took first place in the poster presentation competition at a recent symposium, Frontiers in Materials Research: Applications of Thermal Analysis and Rheology, held in Dallas last month. Xu's poster outlined research into layered silicate nanofillers that are used to strengthen block copolymers, which are nano-scale objects that have multiple applications, ranging from semiconductors to fuel cells. According to Xu, silicate nanofillers could absorb the stress of impact to the easily damaged block copolymers.

Student Researchers Honored at Sigma Xi Research Day
(April 13, 2006) Projects including the synthesization of aptamers used to inhibit illness progression, the growth of horizontally aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes, the development of mathematical models used to explain how the eye focuses and the development of a new method used to turn lunar soil simulants into ceramic bricks garnered several Cullen College of Engineering students recognition at the University of Houston Sigma Xi Research Day. Sigma Xi is a scientific research society and global honor society of scientists and engineers.

UH Student Chapter Hosts Regional AIChE Conference
(April 13, 2006) The University of Houston student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) hosted the organization’s 2006 Southwest Regional Conference on April 7-9. The three-day event attracted more than 130 students from nine universities to participate in chemical engineering professional development and social activities, including plant tours, workshops, research paper and Chem-E-Car competitions, and a job fair.

Engineering Student Athlete Sets the Pace
(April 6, 2006) Mechanical engineering sophomore Oumama Hallal captured first place in a recent five-kilometer race at Texas Southern University Relays. It was the first time she ran this distance competitively, beating out the second place contender by well over a minute. Not only does she succeed as a member of the University of Houston track team, but as an engineering student as well. While maintaining a 3.6 GPA, Hallal finds time in between running, classes and homework to volunteer as a math and science tutor for other student athletes.

Electrical Engineering Undergrad Wins National Goldwater Scholarship
(March 28, 2006) Electrical engineering junior Phuc Huynh was recently named a recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards available to undergraduate students. The scholarship provides funding to sophomore and junior students majoring in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering who plan to pursue a career in research. Huynh, one of 323 students selected nationwide to receive a Goldwater Scholarship, plans to pursue his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and hopes to eventually receive a position at a university to teach and conduct research.

UH Grad Student Pushing the Boundaries of Nanotech Fabrication
(March 1, 2006) Electrical engineering graduate student Barry Craver took second place at a recent superconductivity symposium for his atom beam lithography research. Under the direction of Professor Jack Wolfe and Associate Professor Dmitri Litvinov, Craver will be utilizing his nanotech fabrication technique to possibly build devices as small as four to five nanometers wide, pushing the theoretical limit.

College Names Outstanding Senior, Junior Student
(February 24, 2006) The honor of being named Outstanding Student by the Cullen College of Engineering has been given to electrical engineering senior Ying Hu (pictured right) and mechanical engineering student Julian Vargas. Both Hu and Vargas were honored at a luncheon hosted by the Texas Society of Engineering as part of the National Engineers Week activities.

UH Engineering Students Win Regional Design Competition
(February 14, 2006) A team of students with the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering captured first place in the design competition at the Texas A&M Regional Engineering Conference. Utilizing random items such string, a hula hoop and some wood, freshmen engineering students Leif Bagge, Michael Fernandez and Kevin Weaver built a device that was capable of keeping a ball in motion for more than two and a half hours.

NSBE's First Spring Career Fair Draws Companies to UH
(January 26, 2006) The UH chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is hosting their first ever Spring Career Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the University Center Houston Room.

ISIP Students Benefit from Professional Development Series
(November 17, 2005) University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering students were recently given a real world picture of their future in engineering while participating in a professional development series hosted by the college's Industrial Scholar Interns Program (ISIP). The program offered workshops on topics such as professionalism and ethics, diversity in women and resume writing, and gave students the opportunity to visit ISIP Partners, including KBR, to meet with professionals in the field.

UH Engineering Research Recognized at Annual Keck Conference
(November 4, 2005) University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering received two out of three top awards for research at the 2005 Keck Center for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Training Annual Research Conference poster competition. Chemical engineering graduate student Mariaclara Añez and Associate Professor Michael Nikolaou received second and third place, respectively, for their collaborative research projects presented at the poster competition. Over 100 research posters were submitted from various Gulf Coast Consortia member institutions. Añez is pictured (on right) with fellow UH computer science graduate student and project collaborator, Catherine Putonti.

UH Engineering Students Receive Gas Processors Association Scholarships
(October 28, 2005) University of Houston mechanical engineering seniors Deena Abou-Trabi, Jared Collins, and Sean Hale received scholarships from the Gas Processors Association at their regional meeting held earlier this month in Houston. Scholarships were given to student leaders interested in the gas processing industry from four universities, including Rice, Texas A&M, UH and The University of Texas at Austin, who are active in national engineering societies and maintain good academic standing.

UH Engineering Students Showcase Research at University Research Day
(October 21, 2005) Several Cullen College of Engineering undergraduate students presented posters of their research at The Honor College's First Annual Undergraduate Research Day. The event was designed to recognize the students involved in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, as well as to showcase their research projects. Faculty mentors were also recognized for their role in the university-wide undergraduate research programs.

NSF-Navy Civilian Service Fellowship Program Established
(October 14, 2005) Three UH Cullen College of Engineering ECE graduate students are among the first to participate in the newly established NSF-Navy Civilian Service Fellowship Program. The program offers students a chance to research nanomagnetics in Naval Research and Development Centers over the summer, while pursuing their graduate education at the University of Houston during the academic year. Ariel Ruiz, Darren Smith, and Barry Craver (pictured from left) will be involved with various research projects including the detection of biological agents, development of new techniques used to uncover land mines, and the progression of computer memory to withstand volatile environments.

College 'WELCOMEs' New Program for Women
(September 16, 2005) The Women in Engineering Learning Community for Maximizing Excellence (WELCOME) is a new program at the Cullen College of Engineering designed to establish a support system for female undergraduate students, giving them the opportunity to meet fellow classmates, while interacting with women currently working in the field of engineering. Working female engineers are still being sought to participate in professional-student mentor program.

NSBE's 30th Annual Career Fair Draws Companies to UH
(September 9, 2005) The UH chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is hosting their 29th Annual Career Fair on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the University Center Houston Room.

Shell Campus Pit Stop Challenge Returns to UH
(September 8, 2005) The Shell Campus Pit Stop Challenge will be taking place on Tuesday, September 13, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., between the Cullen College of Engineering Y and L2D2 Buildings.

UH Opens Doors to Displaced Students, Engineering Enrolls Seventy
(September 8, 2005) The UH Cullen College of Engineering has already enrolled at least 70 students from the University of New Orleans, Tulane University and Xavier University as part of the UH System's response to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. UH is opening its doors to eligible students who were displaced from colleges and universities in the affected Gulf Coast area.

UH Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program a Success
(August 12, 2005) Biomedical engineering undergraduate students at the UH Cullen College of Engineering gained ‘real world’ experience while participating in a research-intensive summer internship program at The Methodist Hospital. The students explored several areas of study within the biomedical field, while researching under the direction of mentors in pathology, neurology, radiology, and cardiology laboratories. Opportunities have been made available for such collaborative educational internships through a 30-year partnership agreement between the University of Houston and The Methodist Hospital.

Studies Showcase Superconductivity Savvy at UH
(June 24, 2005) Furthering superconductivity and related research, UH students in science and engineering showcased their original research in a recent campus competition. Four UH graduate students won top honors and prize money at the 29th Semiannual Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH Student Symposium. First place and $200 went to Prashant Gijavanekar, who received his master’s degree in materials engineering from UH this spring.

Engineering a Better Experience
(June 23, 2005) New facilities, equipment and programs have enhanced the undergraduate experience at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. Upgrades include a new career center, more computers, more internship and scholarship opportunities, new technical communications curriculum and additional programs designed for students. UH Biomedical Engineering Junior Wins Fellowship for Model of Human Vascular System
(June 20, 2005) The American Society of Artificial Internal Organs awarded a $500 fellowship to UH biomedical engineering junior Hassan Khalil at their 51st Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. last weekend. Written with the aid of Kamuran Kadipasaoglu, adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at UH and assistant director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Research Laboratories at the Texas Heart Institute, biomedical engineering program director Matt Franchek and deputy director Ralph Metcalfe, Khalil’s abstract detailed the research he has done with a model of the human vascular system. Though artificial organs have been in use for some time, Khalil’s model of the human vascular system will allow for new experimentation in artificial organ control.

ME Student Claims National NASA Fellowship
(May 31, 2005) UH engineering student Sandy Geffert has been named one of 20 national recipients of the Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program from NASA. Geffert is a doctoral student in the mechanical engineering department, and has been working on NASA projects for several years with associate professor Stanley Kleis.

 

First Graduate Research Conference Deemed a Success for ECE
(May 26, 2005) Approximately 40 graduate students in the UH Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) presented their work at the department’s first Graduate Research Conference held recently at TLC2. Seventy-eight people attended the internal conference, including 51 graduate students and 27 faculty members.

UH Sweeps IEEE Region V Conference For Second Consecutive Year
(May 20, 2005) The UH student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) received high honors at the IEEE Region Five Conference. The organization won all four awards for which it was eligible—for the second consecutive year. Professor and advisor Ovidiu Crisan received the honor for the Outstanding Student Branch Counselor of the Year, professor David Jackson for the Outstanding Educator of the Year, Wahad Mehmood for Outstanding Student Member of the Year, and the student branch took home the award for Outstanding Large Student Branch of the Year.

Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Develops Protein-Based Technology for Constructing Biosensors
(May 5, 2005) The government’s task of safeguarding the nation hinges in part on its ability to quickly and accurately detect toxic biological agents. Graduate student Mrinal Shah’s recent breakthrough in liquid-liquid phase separation may be the first integral step along the road to developing a protein-based biosensor that would do just that. Mrinal Shah, who is pursuing a doctorate degree in chemical engineering at UH, presented his research recently at the Keck Annual Research Conference and received the second place award.

Professor Gets Pie in the Face at Annual IEEE Chili Cookoff
(March 16, 2005) Engineering Professor Jeffrey Williams gets hit with a pie during IEEE's annual chili cook-off last Thursday. Students and faculty gathering for games and non-academic competitions. Several companies were also there to talk to students about future employment opportunities.

Outstanding Senior, Junior Supplement Education Through Internships, Honors Thesis
(February 28, 2005) Alfred Delumpa and Frank Permenter have received the honor of Outstanding Senior and Junior respectively for the Cullen College of Engineering. Each year, professors nominate an outstanding junior and senior from each department, and Frank “Fritz” Claydon, associate dean for undergraduate programs and computer facilities, makes a final decision. Both students were recognized at an Engineer's Week luncheon at Rice University.

UH Engineering Student Gives Back to Community, Teaches to Reinforce Knowledge
(February 18, 2005) Joseph Joubert said, “To teach is to learn twice,” and civil engineering senior Kimani Augustine has lived by that principle. From his teaching career in the Caribbean to the various tutorial programs he participates in at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, Augustine has fed his passion for math and science by sharing it with others.

Engineering Student Crowned ‘UH Homecoming King’
(November 23, 2004) For the second consecutive year, an engineering student was crowned UH Homecoming King. Senior mechanical engineering student Okechukwu Ofili was recognized with the honor at halftime of the UH-East Carolina football game at Robertson Stadium. Last year, Xavier Cano received the same honor. Cano, who graduated last spring, majored in industrial engineering.


Engineering Leadership & Entrepreneurism Program Students Receive Jackets at Investiture

(November 11, 2004) The third team of students to enter the new Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurism Program received their jackets last night at a special Jacket Investiture Dinner. Karl R. Rábago, Energy Group Director of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) gave the keynote address to the students on The Three Disciplines of Sustainable Technology Business Development (pdf file). The program prepares engineering graduates to be more successful when assuming leadership roles in their companies and facing real-world business challenges.

UH Students Reap Academic Benefits, Entertainment at Shell Campus Pit Stop Challenge
(October 19, 2004) In a new recruitment and awareness effort, Shell brought their Pit Stop Challenge to UH in front of the Y building, and more than 100 students came to participate in the event. Students had the opportunity to change a tire on a Ferrari Formula One racecar, in teams of three, to compete for the lowest time. “We had 40 teams of three people each participate, and they were not all students,” Shell Attraction and Recruitment Coordinator Julie Hur Pascoe said. “We didn’t have an official count, but through the day there were also always students just observing.”

UH Engineering Doctoral Candidate Brings Home Four Medals from World Kickboxing Championships
(October 18, 2004) While the student body was settling into the rhythm of the semester, UH engineering doctoral candidate Sandra Geffert (2003 MSME, 2001 BSME) was competing for international titles at the World Kickboxing Championships in Basle, Switzerland. During the six-day trip, Geffert competed in seven events. In Chinese soft style kata and open forms, Geffert took the gold, and she won silver in tae kwon do forms and a bronze in team forms.

ECC Opens 32 Station PC Lab Oct. 1
(September 30, 2004) The Engineering Computation Center (ECC) is pleased to announce the opening of a new 32 station PC laboratory within the ECC complex effective Oct. 1. The computers in this laboratory can operate both in the Windows XP and LINUX environment as the user sees fit. The costs associated with this laboratory were funded in part with Undergraduate Equipment Access Fees and College of Engineering Technology Fees.

UH Chemical Engineering Students Compete in Regional AIChE ChemE Car Competition

While there is no pit crew for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) ChemE Car Competition, the excitement is still there for chemical engineering majors Mansour AbdulBaki and Adrian Morales, the first UH students to ever enter the competition. AbdulBaki and Morales captured a second-place finish.

Engineering Student Uses Laser Vibrometer for Increased Precision in Measurement
(December 10, 2003) Mechanical Engineering graduate student Ryan Link makes playful use of a laser pointer to illustrate the laser vibrometer research he is involved with under the tutelage of mechanical engineering professor David Zimmerman. The laser vibrometer, which the mechanical engineering department acquired in July 2003, is used to measure the vibrations in solid objects in a non-contacting manner, therefore avoiding the use of sensors or accelerometers that alter the object.

Engineering Makes Mark on 2003 Homecoming Court
(December 1, 2003) Engineering students Xavier Cano and Morolake Kuyeti have to hit the books just as hard as any student to achieve academic successes such as the Dean’s List, but it is their colossal involvement in other campus activities that make them extraordinary Cougars. Cano, a senior industrial engineering major, was crowned homecoming king, and Kuyeti, who is majoring in industrial engineering with a concentration on distribution logistics, was honored with a nomination to the homecoming court.

International Karate Champion Merges Biomechanical Engineering with Martial Arts to Realize Goals
(November 24, 2003) In late October, the martial arts world gathered in Limerick, Ireland for the 2003 World Championships, and Sandra Geffert took home multiple wins for the third consecutive year. Geffert, a second year graduate student at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, competed in seven events and captured five medals, including silver medals in soft kata and musical kata, and bronze medals in team kata, team fighting and musical weapons.

IE Major Captures 'Engines of Our Ingenuity' Scholarship
(November 19, 2003) While engineers with a background in elementary education are not ordinary or plentiful, the 2001 scholarship committee still named Rebecca Ginsburg as the first winner of the John Lienhard “Engines of Our Ingenuity” Scholarship Endowment. Ginsburg’s unique situation is one that corresponded with the scholarship committee’s quest for a creative thinker, and with a description of creativity shaped by John Lienhard, M.D. Anderson Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and History.

Spotlight on Student Cinzu Czenn in the Plasma Processing Diagnostics Lab
(October 29, 2003) Chemical Engineering student Cinzu Czenn is using a Tesla Coil to initiate a gaseous discharge in a parallel-plate plasma reactor, similar to ones used in the semiconductor industry to etch fine features in silicon integrated circuits.

Doctoral Students Recognized by IEEE
(July 16, 2003) Timothy Kennedy and William Langston, UH doctoral students in electrical engineering, were recognized at separate IEEE International Symposia this summer. Kennedy's idea is to make cellular reception better without building unsightly new cell towers. Langston is studying how to keep a signal more true to its waveguide, which will help reduce distortion, loss of signal or crosstalk with other components.

Engineering Student Sees Degree as Pathway to Career in Environmental Law

GRADE Camp Offers High School Girls A Peek Into The World Of Engineering
(June 2, 2003) A new camp designed to draw high school girls into the world of engineering is being launched this summer at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. GRADE Camp (Girls Reaching and Demonstrating Excellence in Engineering) is an innovative, challenging day camp designed to introduce high school girls to the marvels of engineering. There will be two one-week camps held this summer, June 9-13 and June 16-20.

Junior Engineering Major Throws Five Shutout Innings to Key Win over No. 1 Rice
(April 17, 2003) Brian Henderson, a junior chemical engineering major, pitched five shut-out innings and gave up only four hits to lead the Houston Cougars baseball team past the Rice Owls, the nation's number one team, Wednesday. The performance propelled the Cougars to a 5-1 win at Cougar Field and improved the team's season record to 19-18.

Ph.D. Candidate Chose UH to Connect with Industry
(April 15, 2003) Karen Coym, a Ph.D. candidate in the UH Cullen College of Engineering, is working with the university's $3.8 million contract with the City of Houston for Air Quality studies. The army of gas canisters are a small part of her arsenal for researching reduction of NOx in diesel emissions using absorption, and then desorption and reduction.

UH Engineering Doctoral Candidate honored by AIChE
(December 17, 2002) Madhuchhanda Bhattacharya, a Ph.D. candidate studying chemical engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, was recently honored for best poster paper by Kinetics, Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The award is $200 and a certificate to be presented at the 2003 AIChE meeting in San Francisc.

UH Engineering Students Compete in Robotics Competition

Master's Students from Mexico Arrive for Graduation Ceremony
(November 19, 2002) Thanks to a new distance-education program at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, 16 students who are employed by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in Mexico will graduate this week with master's degrees in petroeum engineering. It will be the first time any of the students have ever been on the UH campus.

Ph.D. Student Earns Best Presentation Award from Institute of Navigation
(November 13, 2002) UH engineering doctoral candidate Lorena Basilio was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the GPS 2002 meeting of the Institute of Navigation in Portland, Oregon, this fall. Her paper was titled "Defining the Effective Radiation Point for a Microstrip Patch Antenna."

UH Engineering Students Test Creative Skills in 'Impromptu Design Competition'
(October 22, 2002) Thirteen interdisciplinary teams of UH engineering students showed up in the Engineering Commons on a Friday morning this fall with no idea what they were going to be asked to do. Former Engineering Ph.D. Student Receives APS Dissertation Award
(September 10, 2002) Wade Schoppa has been selected to receive the 2002 Andreas Acrivos Dissertation Award in Fluid Dynamics from the American Physical Society. The award honors Schoppa's doctoral research with the UH Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he focused on the mechanisms of fluid turbulence in flow over solid surfaces and the development of new drag reduction strategies applicable to aircraft, ships and pipelines.

NSBE Students Win IEEE Chili Cook-Off
(April 15, 2002) The National Society of Black Engineers won the IEEE Chili Cook-off on March 14. Professor Dave Shattuck was voted as the Outstanding Faculty by IEEE members and Eta Kappa Nu. Texas NSBE Students To 'Walk' For Education

The UH Cullen College of Engineering has solved that problem with its Cooperative Education and Industrial Scholar Interns Program. PROMES Program Helps Engineering Students Sustain Success
(January 17, 2002) Since its modest start in 1974 with only eight students, the Program for Mastery in Engineering Studies (PROMES) has grown to include over 500 members. And according to members, PROMES is an encouraging and helpful influence in their lives.

UH Engineering's Global Outreach
(January 2, 2002) The UH Cullen College of Engineering is now offering master’s programs in Petroleum Engineering and Industrial Engineering in Mexico to Petrleos Mexicanos employees. This program is in partnership with the Universidad La Salle in Mexico City.

Engineering Ambassadors Lead the Way for New Students

UH Society of Black Engineers Encourage Promising Career for Teens During Campus 'Shadow Day'
(Feb. 21, 2001) Good engineers will be in high demand in the years to come, so now is the time for high school students to consider engineering as a career. University of Houston students in the Cullen College of Engineering welcomed a dozen area high school students for the UH National Society of Black Engineers’ first Shadow Day on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. The event coincided with National Engineers Week.
