Forward Progress: Machinist Builds Components for Lab Experiments
(December 1, 2008) Five years ago, Jeff Miller took over as lab machinist supervisor for the college’s department of civil and environmental engineering. The workshop was previously managed by his father-in-law, Martin Kowis, who worked for the department 20 years. Now, Miller is responsible for machining parts for civil engineering research projects within the college.

Engineering Golf Team Takes First at University Tournament
(May 24, 2006) A team comprised of four members from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering took first place in the university’s 19th Annual Department Challenge Golf Tournament, which was held this year on May 16th at the Wildcat Golf Club in Houston. Associate Dean Stuart Long, Professor Jeff Williams, John Costales, a technician in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and son Daniel, who works in the UH Diesel Vehicle Research and Testing Facility, captured the trophy marking the first time a team from the college won the tournament.

Barrera Honored with Staff Excellence Award
(May 18, 2006) Cullen College of Engineering Business Administrator Dorothy Barrera has been recognized with the 2006 University of Houston Staff Excellence Award. A 20-year employee of UH, Barrera's nomination was supported by several staff members from across the university who applauded her outstanding leadership, professionalism and great sense of humor. In addition to her responsibilities at the college, she serves on the University System Fringe Benefits Committee, the University Compensation Committee and the University Staff Human Resources Advisory Committee.

UH Volunteers Help Install Computer Equipment at Third Ward Community Center
(May 9, 2005) John Young and Bobby DeWeers from the UH Cullen College of Engineering, along with other UH staff volunteers from the UH Information Technology department and College of Technology helped install an array of computer equipment at the East Side University Village Community Learning Center last Saturday. The equipment – which included 42 desktop computers, laser printers, digital projectors and a server – were purchased with a major portion of the $100,000 SBC grant that UH awarded to the Third Ward center in 2004.

UH Engineering Communicators Receive Over a Dozen Awards
(June 22, 2004) The UH Cullen College of Engineering's Office of Communications recently added 14 awards to its list of accolades this year from local, regional and national professional organizations.

(May 24, 2004) Nineteen staff employees at the UH Cullen College of Engineering were recognized for their years of service recently by UH.

UH Cullen College of Engineering Faculty & Staff Raise Most Dollars for State Charitable Campaign
(May 10, 2004) UH President Jay Gogue awarded the Cullen College of Engineering with the "Most Dollars Raised" award for faculty and staff participation in the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) at a volunteers thank you reception in late April. Engineering had 37% participation (the university average was roughly 28%) and collected $14,608. UH Chemical Engineering Advisor Sharon Gates Receives UH Staff Excellence Award
(May 5, 2004) For a majority of the 400 chemical engineering undergraduate students, Sharon Gates is more than a familiar face. From working with the students in the classroom to academic advising, she balances her students’ needs like a pro, or a Mom according to associate chair Demetre Economou. Sharon will receive the UH Staff Excellence Award.

Engineering Lab Supervisor Retires After 20 Years of Service
(February 16, 2004) After 20 years of distinguished service with the Cullen College of Engineering, Laboratory Supervisor Martin Kowis has retired. Kowis, who spent 21 years with the FMC Corporation before coming to UH, came to work for the university in 1984 along with his wife Diana.

UH Engineering Communicators Receive Two Regional Awards for Recruitment Brochure
(October 7, 2003) The UH Cullen College of Engineering's Office of Communications recently added two recognition awards to its long list of accolades this year for the college's recruitment brochure, Marvels of Engineering. That makes 13 awards in total for 2003.

Gerald Davenport Helps His ‘Home’ Away From Home By Serving As A SECC Coordinator
(October 2, 2003) Gerald Davenport considers UH his home away from home, and that’s why he has served as a coordinator for UH’s State Employee Charitable Campaign for the past 12 years. UH’s SECC, themed “Shasta Loves Houston,” kicked off Sept. 26 with a luncheon for all SECC coordinators, including Davenport. University officials hope the campaign will surpass last year’s record of more than $151,000 and a 27 percent campus participation rate.

Photographer Joins Engineering Communications Department
(June 30, 2003) The UH Cullen College of Engineering has added photographer Jeffrey Shaw to its staff. Shaw joins the college’s Office of Communications, filling a new position designed to provide full-time photography and video capabilities to the staff.

David Dawlearn Clowns Around For A Cause
(July 8, 2002) David Dawlearn, lab machinist in the UH Department of Chemical Engineering, spends his spare time "clowning around" for local causes. He recently joined ABC Ch. 13 and the March of Dimes for the 11th annual Caring Cradles community-wide baby shower.

ISIP Program Coordinator Receives Rising Star Award
(May 11, 2002) Dawnelle S. Prince, ISIP program coordinator at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, has received the prestigious Rising Star Award from the Texas Association of College Admissions Counseling (TACAC).

Mary Schulz Receives Dean's Meritorious Staff Award
(March 22, 2002) Mary Schulz received the Dean's Meritorious Staff Service Award at the UH Cullen College of Engineering's third annual Staff Appreciation Day on March 18. The dean also recognized staff for years of service.
