First Students to Complete New Engineering Leadership & Entrepreneurism Program

the new Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurism Program completed the two-course sequence. ELEP is one of only a handful of its kind in the country, and represents a recent trend toward incorporating business concepts into engineering programs. The program prepares engineering graduates to be more successful when assuming leadership roles in their companies and facing real-world business challenges.

Engineering Departments Join Forces with Writing Center for Capstone Design Course
(December 18, 2003) Engineering is said to be the application of scientific and mathematical principles, but professors Rick Bannerot, Paul Ruchhoeft and Ross Kastor of the Capstone Design course realize the value of communication in engineering.

NSF Funds Outreach Education Programs at UH Cullen College of Engineering
(December 18, 2003) Grants totaling nearly $2 million -- designed to retain and recruit engineering students and expose high school teachers to research -- were received this month by the UH Cullen College of Engineering from the National Science Foundation.

Industrial Engineering Launches New Website
(December 15, 2003) The Department of Industrial Engineering launched its redesigned website with the help of the Cullen College of Engineering's Office of Communications.

Engineering Student Uses Laser Vibrometer for Increased Precision in Measurement
(December 10, 2003) Mechanical Engineering graduate student Ryan Link makes playful use of a laser pointer to illustrate the laser vibrometer research he is involved with under the tutelage of mechanical engineering professor David Zimmerman. The laser vibrometer, which the mechanical engineering department acquired in July 2003, is used to measure the vibrations in solid objects in a non-contacting manner, therefore avoiding the use of sensors or accelerometers that alter the object.

Groundbreaking of New Complex
(Dec. 5, 2003) Engineering alumni, faculty and staff were on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony of the new Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex Dec. 5.

Mechanical Engineering Launches New Website

Key research areas converge in new Science & Engineering Complex
(December 4, 2003) UH is commemorating a “groundbreaking” step toward the future of collaborative research and high-tech classroom instruction. The Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex will be the only academic facility of its kind in Houston, where the pursuit of crucial cross-disciplinary research in a state-of-the-art structure will ultimately lead to breakthrough innovations.

Ostrofsky Takes Second Eccles Medal For Logistics Education
(December 2, 2003) The Society of Logistics Engineers recently awarded Benjamin Ostrofsky, UH Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering, his second Eccles Medal at the society's 2003 International Symposium.

Engineering Makes Mark on 2003 Homecoming Court
(December 1, 2003) Engineering students Xavier Cano and Morolake Kuyeti have to hit the books just as hard as any student to achieve academic successes such as the Dean’s List, but it is their colossal involvement in other campus activities that make them extraordinary Cougars. Cano, a senior industrial engineering major, was crowned homecoming king, and Kuyeti, who is majoring in industrial engineering with a concentration on distribution logistics, was honored with a nomination to the homecoming court.
