International Karate Champion Merges Biomechanical Engineering with Martial Arts to Realize Goals
(November 24, 2003) In late October, the martial arts world gathered in Limerick, Ireland for the 2003 World Championships, and Sandra Geffert took home multiple wins for the third consecutive year. Geffert, a second year graduate student at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, competed in seven events and captured five medals, including silver medals in soft kata and musical kata, and bronze medals in team kata, team fighting and musical weapons.

IE Major Captures 'Engines of Our Ingenuity' Scholarship
(November 19, 2003) While engineers with a background in elementary education are not ordinary or plentiful, the 2001 scholarship committee still named Rebecca Ginsburg as the first winner of the John Lienhard “Engines of Our Ingenuity” Scholarship Endowment. Ginsburg’s unique situation is one that corresponded with the scholarship committee’s quest for a creative thinker, and with a description of creativity shaped by John Lienhard, M.D. Anderson Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and History./p>

Engineering a Better Environment
(November 14, 2003) The UH Cullen College of Engineering has a rich tradition of accomplishment in the field of environmental engineering, especially in the realm of drinking water purification, as the cover art illustrates. National Academy of Engineering member Jim Symons led the UH faculty into the spotlight in the 1980s. Today the college is a leader in designing improvements in drinking water filtration, groundwater protection, soil contaminant remediation and air quality monitoring. UH Cullen College of Engineering Hosts 600 High School Students at Open House
(November 12, 2003) A record 600 high school juniors and seniors met with University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering faculty and discovered the advantages of earning an engineering degree from UH at the college’s Open House on Nov. 11.

Long Elected to IEEE Board of Directors
(November 11, 2003) Stuart Long, electrical & computer engineering professor and associate dean in the UH Cullen College of Engineering, has been named Director-Elect of Division IV of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, or IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional society.

UH Engineering Alumni Celebrate Homecoming at Brunch, Tailgate
(November 11, 2003) Engineering alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends came out to the UH Cullen College of Engineering Homecoming Brunch and Engineering Alumni Association's tailgate party on Saturday, Nov. 8. A team of faculty, alumni and students from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering won the Armchair Olympics.

UH Engineering Students Develop Demos for High Schools
(November 4, 2003) Jennifer Luna, a junior mechanical engineering student, exhibits her Oscillating Sprinkler Project during Design I. Students were asked to develop a demonstration for high school students of a machine element associated with a drive train, and were allowed to use a "liberal" interpretation of a drive train.
