Time Can't Erase Fond Memories for Civil Engineering Alumnus
(October 31, 2003) LeRoy Laycock (1953 BSCE) recently took a moment to thumb through his old yearbook. Serving on the calling committee for this year’s Houston Alumni Organization’s Golden Reunion has given him the chance to catch up with friends he hasn’t talked to in 50 years.

The UH Cullen College of Engineering will honor the Classes of 1960-1969 at a special Homecoming Brunch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 in the Commons area of Engineering Bldg 1. Following the reception, the Engineering Alumni Association will host its annual tailgate party.

 

 

Spotlight on Student Cinzu Czenn in the Plasma Processing Diagnostics Lab
(October 29, 2003) Chemical Engineering student Cinzu Czenn is using a Tesla Coil to initiate a gaseous discharge in a parallel-plate plasma reactor, similar to ones used in the semiconductor industry to etch fine features in silicon integrated circuits.

Engineering Student 'Skates' Through UH with Eye on Graduation
(October 17, 2003) UH engineering student Matthew Davis makes a connection between skateboarding and mechanical engineering, “Now that I understand physics more, I can understand how a lot of tricks work in skateboarding.”

Homecoming Activities for Engineering Alumni on Nov. 8
(October 13, 2003) The UH Cullen College of Engineering will honor the Classes of 1960-1969 at a special Homecoming Brunch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 8 in the Commons area of Engineering Building 1. Nobel Laureate Focuses On Electronic Polymers In Talk At UH
(October 8, 2003) Nobel Prize-winning chemist Alan G. MacDiarmid will discuss such groundbreaking concepts as disposable electronics from 1:30-2:30pm on Friday, Oct. 17 in the UH Hilton Hotel, Grand Ballroom. As part of UH's Texas Center for Superconductivity & Advanced Materials Distinguished Lecture Series, the lecture is free and open to the public. Individuals planning to attend should RSVP by Friday, Oct. 10 to 713-743-8210. Among others, sponsors include the Cullen College of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.

UH Petroleum Engineering Program Expands
(October 7, 2003) Earning a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from UH will be easier starting in January 2004 when the Cullen College of Engineering expands its course offerings in this program to two teaching centers – UH System at Sugar Land and UH System at Cinco Ranch.

UH Engineering Communicators Receive Two Regional Awards for Recruitment Brochure
(October 7, 2003) The UH Cullen College of Engineering's Office of Communications recently added two recognition awards to its long list of accolades this year for the college's recruitment brochure, Marvels of Engineering. That makes 13 awards in total for 2003.

College Hosts Open House for High School Students
(October 6, 2002) High school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to meet world-class faculty and discover the advantages of earning an engineering degree from UH at an Open House from 9am-1pm on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

First Jacket Investiture for Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurism Program
(October 3, 2003) The Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurism Program, launched in the UH Cullen College of Engineering in Spring 2003, recently held its first Induction Ceremony and Jacket Investiture for students on Sept. 30.

Gerald Davenport Helps His ‘Home’ Away From Home By Serving As A SECC Coordinator
(October 2, 2003) Gerald Davenport considers UH his home away from home, and that’s why he has served as a coordinator for UH’s State Employee Charitable Campaign for the past 12 years. UH’s SECC, themed “Shasta Loves Houston,” kicked off Sept. 26 with a luncheon for all SECC coordinators, including Davenport. University officials hope the campaign will surpass last year’s record of more than $151,000 and a 27 percent campus participation rate.

DNA Production Patent Awarded to Two UH-Related Engineers
(October 1, 2003) Richard C. Willson III, UH associate professor of chemical engineering, and Jason Murphy, who earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from UH in 2002, have been awarded a U.S. patent for a new process for the separation and assay of biochemical cultures by compaction agents. The U.S. Patent 6,605,470 is expected to have a substantial impact on the production of DNA and other nucleic acids, a multi-million dollar enterprise.
