Neuro-Engineering, Vision Research Earn UH Professor NIH Appointment
(June 29, 2005) Strides in vision research employing neuro-engineering and computational neuroscience earned one UH engineering professor a coveted spot in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) peer review group. Haluk Ogmen, department chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering at UH, has been invited to serve as a member of the NIH Central Visual Processing Study Section, Center for Scientific Review. His four-year term begins July 1, 2005.

UH Civil Engineering Research Recognized with SSRC Vinnakota Award
(June 29, 2005) The results of research conducted in the UH Cullen College of Engineering were recently recognized in April 2005 by the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC), which presented them with the Vinnakota Award for a paper detailing their research efforts. The research work will soon be put into practice in the construction of bridges used in the renovation of the Fulton and Irvington overpasses on Loop 610 in north Houston. Ozgur Egilmez, Ph.D. candidate, and Professors Todd Helwig and Reagan Herman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering have developed details that will enable the construction of more efficient and economical bridges.

Studies Showcase Superconductivity Savvy at UH
(June 24, 2005) Furthering superconductivity and related research, UH students in science and engineering showcased their original research in a recent campus competition. Four UH graduate students won top honors and prize money at the 29th Semiannual Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH Student Symposium. First place and $200 went to Prashant Gijavanekar, who received his master’s degree in materials engineering from UH this spring.

UH Biomedical Engineering Junior Wins Fellowship for Model of Human Vascular System
(June 20, 2005) The American Society of Artificial Internal Organs awarded a $500 fellowship to UH biomedical engineering junior Hassan Khalil at their 51st Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. last weekend. Written with the aid of Kamuran Kadipasaoglu, adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at UH and assistant director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Research Laboratories at the Texas Heart Institute, biomedical engineering program director Matt Franchek and deputy director Ralph Metcalfe, Khalil’s abstract detailed the research he has done with a model of the human vascular system. Though artificial organs have been in use for some time, Khalil’s model of the human vascular system will allow for new experimentation in artificial organ control.
