New Whole-Organ Biosensor May Enhance Homeland Security
(May 26, 2004) Wouldn’t it be nice if we could simply grow new, healthy body parts in the lab whenever we needed to replace diseased or damaged ones? That is the ultimate goal of tissue engineering: to grow replacement body parts on demand, says Adam Capitano, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. 19 on College Staff Recognized for Years of Service
(May 24, 2004) Nineteen staff employees at the UH Cullen College of Engineering were recognized for their years of service recently by UH.

 

Engineering Alumni Announces 2004 Recipients of the Distinguished Engineering Awards
(May 17, 2004) William C. Miller Jr. (1955 BSPE) and John W. Rouse (1973 BSCE) will receive the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award at the 2004 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday, June 4 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Houston. Tanya Dugat Wickliff (1989 BSME) will receive the Distinguished Young Engineering Alumna Award and Elizabeth D. Rockwell will receive the Roger Eichhorn Leadership Service Award. Chemical engineering professor Dan Luss will receive the Abraham E. Dukler Distinguished Engineering Faculty Award. The keynote speaker for the evening will be Harris County Judge Robert Eckles.

Metcalfe, Vekilov Named Deputy Directors of Biomedical Engineering Program
(May 13, 2004) The Biomedical Engineering Program, which was launched last fall by the UH Cullen College of Engineering, is quickly attaining a full staff with director Matt Franchek naming Ralph Metcalfe and Peter Vekilov as deputy directors for the program.

Clean Diesel Benefits Houston
(May 12, 2004) At the UH Cullen College of Engineering’s newly-developed Diesel Vehicle Research and Testing Facility today, EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene announced the Bush administration’s Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule will cut emission levels from construction, agricultural and industrial diesel engines by more than 90 percent. The rule was signed by EPA Administrator Leavitt yesterday.

UH Cullen College of Engineering Faculty & Staff Raise Most Dollars for State Charitable Campaign
(May 10, 2004) UH President Jay Gogue awarded the Cullen College of Engineering with the "Most Dollars Raised" award for faculty and staff participation in the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) at a volunteers thank you reception in late April. Engineering had 37% participation (the university average was roughly 28%) and collected $14,608. UH Cullen College of Engineering Hosts UH/ASME Cajun Crawfish Boil, Opening to OTC Conference
(May 6, 2004) On May 2, nearly 5,000 people converged on the UH campus to enjoy crawfish and festivities at the 16th Annual UH/ASME Cajun Crawfish Boil. UH Chemical Engineering Advisor Sharon Gates Receives UH Staff Excellence Award
(May 5, 2004) For a majority of the 400 chemical engineering undergraduate students, Sharon Gates is more than a familiar face. From working with the students in the classroom to academic advising, she balances her students’ needs like a pro, or a Mom according to associate chair Demetre Economou. Sharon will receive the UH Staff Excellence Award.

(May 4, 2004) Dean Raymond Flumerfelt announced the winners of this year's faculty teaching and research awards at the UH Cullen College of Engineering's annual Faculty and Staff Meeting on April 29.

UH Engineering Professor Chung Honored For Words of Wisdom
(May 3, 2004) There aren’t enough hours in the day for this year’s faculty recipient of the University of Houston’s George Magner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising. Christopher Chung, associate professor of industrial engineering, couldn’t feel more honored for this recognition of his efforts outside the classroom.
