NSBE Raises Education Awareness in Houston
(April 30, 2008) Members from chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers went door-to-door in an underprivileged neighborhood April 26 sharing information about education. Deemed, “A Walk for Education,” NSBE members and other volunteers spent much of the day passing out information on financial aid, both the ACT and SAT, scholarships and obtaining a GED.

UH Engineering Students Compete in Robotics Competition
(April 30, 2008) University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering students were recognized on April 19 for the design and performance of one of two robots entered in the 2008 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 5 Technical, Professional and Student Conference. The student robotics competition brought 30 teams to Kansas City to evaluate the lifting ability, motion control, color sensing, wireless communication and speed of each team’s autonomous robot.

Mudbugs, Barbecue and Moonwalks at 20th Annual UH Festival
(April 29, 2008) The University of Houston and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are hosting the 20th Annual UH/ASME Cajun Crawfish Boil from 1 to 5 p.m. at Lynn Eusan Park on Sunday, May 4. The event is open to the public, and will include a moonwalk and games for children. Individual tickets are $35, student tickets are $20 and children under 6 years old get in for free.

Area High School Students Get a Look at UH Engineering
(April 28, 2008) Houston-area high school seniors toured UH Cullen College of Engineering April 25 as part of a Shadow Day organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The event, the first of its kind on the engineering campus, brought 16 students and three teachers from Sam Rayburn and J. Frank Dobie high schools to the college for an in-depth look into the field.

Engineering Alumnus Wins National Award
(April 28, 2008) Scott Elmer (1997 BSCE), city engineer and director of public works in Missouri City, has been named one of the Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year by the American Public Works Association. The national award will be given to Elmer this August at the Public Works Congress and Exposition in New Orleans. He has been previously honored with the association's National Emerging Leader in Public Works Award and has received the Texas Public Works Leader of the Year Award.

UH Professors Publish Third Book on Visual Perception
(April 23, 2008) Bruno Breitmeyer, professor of psychology at UH, and Haluk Ogmen, chair and professor of electrical & computer engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, have published their third book in two years on visual perception and consciousness, specifically on how the brain processes various visual stimuli at conscious and unconscious levels. The book titled "Experimental Phenomena of Consciousness: A Brief Dictionary" was written in collaboration with Talis Bachman, professor of psychology at the University of Tartu, Estonia.

UH Researchers to Receive Significant Awards for Tight Gas Research
(April 8, 2008) Two University of Houston chemical engineering professors will receive grant funding from the Department of Energy-funded Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) to pursue research in an effort increase the nation's supply of energy from unconventional sources, like gas shales and tight gas sands. RPSEA recently selected 19 proposals nationwide, two of which involve engineering professors Michael Nikolaou and Kishore Mohanty, to participate in its Unconventional Resources Program.
