Engineering Career Fair Connects Industry and Students
(February 28, 2008) Over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, along with several recent graduates, attended the Spring Engineering and Technical Career Fair held Feb. 6 for the opportunity to connect with industry, and explore job and internship opportunities. Sponsored by the Engineering Career Center, the bi-annual career fair has become the greatest single resource for obtaining employment for engineering, science and technology students at UH. A total of 116 companies attended this semester’s event.

2008 EWeek Event Awards Nearly $29K to Students, Organizations
(February 27, 2008) Last week, the University of Houston Engineering Alumni Association (EAA) hosted its 2008 Engineers Week Reception & Program to celebrate how engineers "make a world of difference". The event is held annually during National Engineers Week to provide cash awards to engineering students and student organizations, while acknowledging generous corporate supporters. Forty-three students and two student organizations were awarded nearly $29,000 during the event, which attracted some 220 engineering alumni, faculty, staff, students and sponsors.

UH President Renu Khator Visits Cullen College of Engineering
(February 26, 2008) University of Houston President Renu Khator visited the Cullen College of Engineering last week to discuss major college initiatives and strategic planning with Dean Joseph Tedesco and the college's executive council. She had an opportunity to greet many engineering faculty, staff and students while touring the engineering career and computing centers, before attending a reception where she discussed the role that engineering will play in the university's future.

Engineering Researchers Develop Advanced Technique for Water Purification
(February 20, 2008) Shankar Chellam, professor of environmental engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, and environmental engineering graduate student, Appala Raju Badireddy, have demonstrated a new technique that reduces the biological fouling of water purification filters caused by the growth of bacteria colonies and the formation of biofilm. Featured on the cover of the February issue of Biotechnology & Bioengineering, Chellam’s findings may lead to more advanced methods of treating membrane filters.

Professor Recognized for Lifetime Work on Enhanced Oil Recovery
(February 12, 2008) Kishore Mohanty, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, will receive one of four 2008 IOR (Improved Oil Recovery) Pioneer Awards at the 15th Annual SPE/DOE Improved Oil Recovery Symposium in April. The award is given every two years to researchers worldwide who have dedicated a lifetime of work to enhancing the process of oil and/or gas recovery. Mohanty's research focuses on enhanced oil recovery, which involves the development of various cost-effective methods to retrieve more petroleum out of abandoned reservoirs.
