Engineering Students Heavily Recruited, Grads Weighing Multiple Offers
(February 28, 2007) The Engineering Career Center is experiencing an exceptionally heavy recruiting season this year. Many of Cullen College's spring graduates are already weighing multiple job offers, partly due to the growing demand for engineers in the region, but also partly due to new tools and services offered by the Career Center in an effort to better connect students and employers.

Over $22k Presented to Students During Annual EWeek Reception
(February 28, 2007) The Engineering Alumni Association hosted the 2007 Engineers Week Reception on Tuesday, Feb. 20, during National Engineers Week. Thirty-two students and three students organizations were awarded over $22,000 during the reception that hosted some 200 engineering alumni, faculty, staff, students and sponsors. EAA hosts the event annually to provide support for Cullen College of Engineering students and to celebrate how engineers "make a world of difference."

Cullen College Grads, Students Honored During EWeek
(February 27, 2007) The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering was well represented in Houston-area events that recognized National Engineers Week. Four college alumni or current students were honored as 2007 Young Engineers of the Year by various professional associations. Civil engineering graduate student Courtney Bird was honored by the Houston-Galveston Post of the Society of American Military Engineers; Kenneth Flakes (2002 BSME) was honored by the National Society of Black Engineers - Houston Alumni Extension; Yaramy Treviño (1995 BSEE) was honored by the Society of Mexican-American Engineers and Scientists; and Xiuli Wang (2000 Ph.D. ChE) was honored by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, USA.

Bechtel Provides Continued Support for Cullen College Programs
(February 23, 2007) Cullen College distinguished alum John Duty (1969 BSME), executive vice president of Bechtel Oil Gas & Chemicals, Inc., presented a gift to the college on behalf of the Bechtel Group Foundation, a long-time supporter of the college and university, to provide scholarship support for several of the college’s diversified programs and organizations, including University of Houston student chapter of The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES).

Cullen College Names Outstanding Students for 2006-2007
(February 19, 2007) The University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering has named Phuc Huynh (ECE) and Alfonso Carmona (ChE) this year's most outstanding senior and junior student, respectively. The two will be honored at a luncheon hosted by the Texas Society of Engineering as part of the National Engineers Week activities. Twelve other outstanding junior and senior students are recognized by their respective programs. The entire list is published in this week's special edition of the Houston Business Journal, the 2007 Engineers Week Guide.

Jamaican Delegation Seeks Partnership with Cullen College
(February 8, 2007) A delegation from Jamaica made a visit to the Cullen College of Engineering to discuss the college’s energy initiatives and to explore the possibility of developing an educational partnership. The Jamaican Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy & Commerce, the Honourable Phillip Paulwell, led the group comprised of several individuals from Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ), Petrojam Limited and the University of West Indies at Mona, Jamaica.

UH Professor Honored for Groundbreaking Structural Research
(February 1, 2007) Thomas Hsu, the John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, has received the Arthur J. Boase Award from the American Concrete Institute for his work in the field of reinforced concrete research. For the past 20 years, Hsu has conducted research with a piece of equipment called the "Universal Element Tester", a machine that tests the durability of reinforced concrete under variable conditions.
