Dorothy Barrera, the business administrator for the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, has been recognized with a 2006 Staff Excellence Award from the university.

Barrera was nominated by Carol Barr, business administrator for the university’s Department of English. Her nomination was supported by Raymond Flumerfelt, dean of the college of engineering; John Wolfe, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Abel Garza, executive director for the Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity; Rosemary Grimmet executive director of Research Services; and Rhonda Stafford, department business administrator for the Composites Engineering & Applications Center.

A 20-year employee of the university, Barrera was praised in her nomination materials as a skilled business administrator who ensures the college, with over 2,500 students, 115 faculty, 91 staff and 15 separate programs, adheres to its financial and administrative guidelines. She is also recognized as a more-than reliable colleague and as a supervisor who brings the best out in her employees.

“Faculty and staff seek her opinion and her help because she has the reputation of doing a good job quickly, efficiently and with good humor,” Grimmet wrote in support of Barrera’s nomination. “She expects the best from her employees, she provides them with the tools to succeed and she serves as an example for them to follow.”

In addition to excelling at her official duties, Barrera is a committed member of the university community. She has sat on several university committees and is currently a member of the University System Fringe Benefits Committee; the University Compensation Committee; and the University Staff Human Resources Advisory Committee.

“I’ve had a wonderful opportunity with the university. I’ve been promoted through the ranks with the help and support of faculty and staff. It’s an excellent place to grow in your career and to broaden your experience. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else,” she said.

Barrera, along with other honorees, was recognized at a luncheon and ceremony on May 16.
