OUR PROGRAM

The Capstone Design Program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been in existence in more or less its present form since 1981. At that time it was a course in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Industrial Engineering (1987) has been added to the program. Currently approximately 80 senior engineering students from the two departments take the multidisciplinary capstone course each year. Since 1981 over four hundred projects have been sponsored by over fifty private corporations and government agencies. These sponsors have been exceedingly pleased with the solutions provided by the students.

Industry involvement is extremely important for the success of our capstone design program. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) requires that engineering curricula include a course that provides a “capstone” experience to students before they graduate. In our capstone experience.

Four person, multidisciplinary teams are formed to work on projects for one semester.

Project sponsors are expected to cover all expenses for the project and are asked to pay an administration fee of $2000 for each project. These additional funds are used to support unfunded projects like national student design competitions.
