MIE Degree
  • 36 semester hours of graduate courses are required for the MIE Course selection must be approved by the Department’s Graduate Program Director.
  • These requisite degree program hours are in addition to any leveling courses.
  • Students whose primary language is not English are required to complete compulsory English Communications courses.
  • No more than 6 semester hours of course work applied to this degree may be taken outside the IE Department.
  • The student is required to take minimum 5 core courses under their concentration area from the Ergonomics, Human Factors Engineering or Occupational Safety Engineering.
  • Students are required to take the following six courses:
    • INDE 6372 (Advanced Linear Optimization)
    • INDE 6364 (Advanced Engineering Statistics)
    • INDE 6361 (Production Planning and Control)
    • INDE 6370 (Digital Simulation)
    • INDE 6383 (Computer Aided Manufacturing)
    • INDE 6365/INDE 6337
      (Engineering Economics II/Human Factors in Systems Design)*

    • * Students are required to take either one of these two courses.
MSIE Degree
  • 36 semester hours of approved graduate courses including minimum 6 hours (3 hours research and 3 hours thesis) are required for the MSIE degree.
  • These requisite degree program hours are in addition to any leveling courses.
  • Students whose primary language is not English are required to complete compulsory English Communications courses.
  • The student is required to take minimum 5 core courses under their concentration area from the ergonomics, human factors engineering or occupational safety engineering tracks table.
  • The Program’s Advisor approves selection of all core and elective courses.
  • Students are required to take the following six courses:
    • INDE 6372 (Advanced Linear Optimization)
    • INDE 6364 (Advanced Engineering Statistics)
    • INDE 6361 (Production Planning and Control)
    • INDE 6370 (Digital Simulation)

Advisory Committee for MSIE Candidates
  • The candidate must select an advisory committee whose composition is subject to the approval of the IE Director of Graduate Programs and the IE Department Chairman near the completion of course work.
  • The Director of Graduate Programs and the IE Department Chairman must approve any subsequent changes to the composition of this committee.
  • The Advisory Committee must be composed of at least three faculty members, including at least two members from the IE Department and at least one from outside the department.
  • A formal thesis proposal must be submitted to the Advisory Committee and Director of Graduate Programs and the IE Department Chairman within one semester after the Advisory Committee is selected and approved.
  • The proposal presentation is to be scheduled at the convenience of the committee.
  • The student should provide committee members with a copy of the proposal about two weeks before the scheduled presentation.
Ph.D. Degree
  • Students are required to take 84 semester hours of approved graduate courses beyond the Bachelor’s Degree; this includes 54 semester hours of approved graduate courses plus 30 hours of research (12 hours) and dissertation (18 hours).
  • Students who earned both their BSIE and MSIE degrees from an accredited university must take minimum 24 hours of content courses and 30 hours of research (12 hours) and dissertation (18 hours).
  • Candidates with MS degrees in other disciplines are required to take 54 semester hours of approved graduate courses. Students may petition up to 6 semester hours with a minimum grade of "B" to be transferred upon approval of the IE Chairman and the Associate Dean of the Cullen College of Engineering.
  • In addition, the Department requires that all graduating Ph.D. students must complete at least 30 semester hours in IE courses.
  • The selection of core and elective courses must be determined by the student’s dissertation advisor.
  • Students are required to complete one year residency with full time enrollment.
  • Satisfactory performance on the Ph.D. screening examination and oral defense of proposal is required prior to final defense of the Ph.D. dissertation.
  • The Ph.D. degree will be confirmed upon the successful final defense of the dissertation.
  • While following the same requirements as found in the other tracks within the IE Department the exceptions for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Engineering with concentration in Ergonomics, Human Factors Engineering, and Occupational Safety Engineering are listed below:
  • Nine (9) hours of the 54 semester hours of approved graduate level coursework beyond the Masters Degree (MSIE or MIE), including 30 hours of research and dissertation under faculty direction, may be taken outside the IE Department and will count towards the Ph.D. degree.
  • More than 9 hours of graduate level coursework to be taken outside the IE Department is contingent upon graduate director/dissertation committee approval.
