Department of Industrial Engineering
Admissions
Admission Requirements
Entrance requirements into the graduate programs within the Department of Industrial Engineering are summarized below:
  • The Cullen College of Engineering requires a minimum of 3.0/4.0 G.P.A. over the last 60 semester hours or 90-quarter hours for the admission to the graduate programs.
  • Conditional admission to graduate studies in Industrial Engineering applies only to the Master’s program and may sometimes be granted to applicants with a G.P.A. of 2.70/4.0 or better.
  • Students who transfer from another graduate program must have at least a 3.0/4.0 G.P.A. on all graduate work completed.
  • Applicants for all graduate programs must submit official GRE scores.
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (written) or 213 (computer) or higher is required of International Students whose native language is not English (this does not apply if the applicant received a degree at a U.S. institution).
  • All Ph.D. applicants should have completed an appropriate Master’s program with thesis or demonstrated ability for research and technical writing. Students who have not written a thesis will be required to demonstrate such capabilities through work with an UH faculty member.
  • A degree in an engineering discipline is recommended. However, applicants with degrees in closely related fields may be accepted to the graduate program subject to additional requirements typically entailing completion of leveling courses in the engineering sciences.

Each student is responsible for being familiar with the degree requirements as stated in the current catalogs of the college and university and this brochure.

Educational Background
The Industrial Engineering Department considers graduate admission applicants with a variety of undergraduate majors. However, all applicants are expected to have completed a minimal core of mathematics, science and engineering courses before admission can be granted. This core background is described below. Listed courses (or their equivalents) are required.

    • MATH 1431 Calculus I
    • MATH 1432 Calculus II
    • MATH 2433 Calculus III
    • MATH 3321 Engineering Math / Differential Equations
    • INDE 1331 Computing for Engineers
    • INDE 2333 Probability & Statistics I

Students who have completed all but six hours of the above core requirements and also satisfy all other admission requirements may be admitted for graduate study in Industrial Engineering. Completion of remaining core requirements remains a pre-requisite to graduate degree completion.

    Admission Procedures
Each applicant must submit the following:

    1. Interested students may download an Application from the Internet and either mail in to address below or bring the completed form to the IE Department - for the admissions process to not be delayed this form must not be filled out online.
    2. The University’s non-negotiable policy does not permit this fee to be either deferred or waived. Credit card payment is acceptable as fee payment for online submission.
    4. Two sets in your school’s language and two sets in English of official original UNDERGRADUATE transcripts / mark sheets with ALL semester coursework completed and ALL earned grades / marks posted. Note: Transcripts / mark sheets must come from the university that that the college is affiliated with AND must be recognized as being an accredited institution by U of H - see * below.
    5. Two sets in your school’s language and two sets in English of official original GRADUATE transcripts / mark sheets with ALL semester coursework completed and ALL earned grades / marks posted. Note: Transcripts / mark sheets must come from the university that that the college is affiliated with AND must be recognized as being an accredited institution by U of H - see * below.
    6. Two sets in your school’s language and two sets in English of official original transcripts / mark sheets showing all semester(s) coursework completed if currently attending or did attend other academic institution(s) after receiving BS and/or MS degree. Note: Transcripts / mark sheets must come from the university that that the college is affiliated with AND must be recognized as being an accredited institution by UH - see * below.
    7. Official PROVISIONAL degree / diploma is temporarily acceptable UNTIL the official original is presented in this office.
    8. *It is mandatory that any institution attended which is not accredited for recognition by our university must have their country’s Ministry of Education send a letter verifying the degree received is equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor of Science Degree -and- the institution attended is accredited for recognition by our university. You can also go to your country's consulate here for a letter verifying the same information. Please check on this to avoid delays in processing the paperwork.
    9. All students with foreign credentials must submit the Degree Clarification Form located in the application booklet, or download the form from the Internet and mail it in to the IE Department. You may also do your own listing all institutions attended, the years, and degrees, if any, received.

Two (2) work reference letters for the non-thesis M.I.E. graduate program only in the Engineering Management concentration are required from current employers attesting to the applicant’s work experience / performance studies typed on their own letterhead and submitted directly by them to me.
    14. Mandatory photographs be sent in as follows: all Domestic U.S. citizen or permanent resident applicants must send in one (1) passport or Polaroid size photograph; while all International applicants who hold or will be holding non-immigrant visas must send in two (2) Passport Size Photographs.
FOR #1 to #14: NO DECISION IS MADE unless the application, fee, transcripts / mark sheets with ALL SEMESTERS’ grades/marks posted, proof of degree earned, GRE, TOEFL are received in this office and not the office of admissions.

ETS ONLY SENDS SCORES DIRECTLY TO ADMISSIONS AND NEVER TO THE DEPARTMENT - for the GRE and/or TOEFL to be considered official originals by me read following carefully:
      • 6870 campus institution code AND NOT OUR department code must be on them.
      • 6870 code is for both University of Houston Central Campus at 4800 Calhoun and University of Houston-University Park at 4800 Calhoun since they are one and the same.
      • TO AVOID DELAY: when you receive your scores with our 6870 campus institution code immediately email, fax, or mail me copies. Note that I never know when ETS sends scores or when admissions receives them or posts them on UH student records and I cannot check everyday due to other duties.
      • If currently attending classes in the U.S. have that university’s admissions directly send me stamped, attested, notarized, or certified photocopies of your scores in a sealed envelope.
      • It is mandatory that if you are approved for admission, your official original GRE / TOEFL scores must be posted on our student records when you register for courses; if not, then when you apply for graduation, the process will be delayed.
      • THREE-YEAR SCHOOLS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
      • PARTIAL EVALUATIONS ARE NOT DONE IN THIS DEPARTMENT on all grades or marks received are only done when all completed and posted semester work grades / marks have been awarded (ex: if mark sheets have 6 completed semesters the 7th & 8th completed semesters are needed; if currently in last semester then transcript / mark sheet with completed grades / marks earned are required).
      • The awarded degree / diploma / degree certificate is required. If your institution issues a PROVISIONAL degree / diploma it is temporarily acceptable UNTIL the official original is presented to me in this office. It is mandatory that if you are approved for admission, your official original proof of degree awarded must be posted on our student records when you register for courses; if not, this will delay the review process when you apply for graduation.
      • India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Jordan must submit mark sheets and not transcript or grade report. China, France, Sweden, Belgium, England, Romania, Taiwan, Korea, etc. whose institution only produces transcripts must submit them in percentage form.
      • The University your college is affiliated with must issue the mark sheets. Photocopied mark sheets that the University’s registrar or notary have stamped and attested are acceptable since those copies stamped and attested by your college’s, chairman, lecturer, professor -or- a U. S. notary are not acceptable!
      • If currently attending classes in the U.S. you can ask that university’s admissions department to directly send me stamped, attested, notarized certified photocopies of your foreign transcripts / mark sheets in a sealed envelope.
      • If you have only one set of official original transcript / mark sheets, degree, and/or diploma for yourself then a) bring them to me to photocopy and b) you go to UH International Admissions Office at Room 125 Ezekiel Cullen Building for them to photocopy.

Visa status applicants must submit the following to this office for the semester you want to attend:
    15. Statement of Understanding located inside the application booklet, or downloaded and printed out from the Internet must be filled out and mailed in to the IE Department.
    16. Letter of Financial Backing located inside the application booklet, or downloaded and printed out from the Internet must be filled out and mailed in to the IE Department, along with current bank statement / certification. Please read all this information carefully for submitting the correct amount of assets. Note that Letter of Financial Backing and bank statement documents are only valid for 6 months from the date written on them and the I-20 is not issued if the date is expired.

    17. FOR #15 and #16: Letter of Financial Backing and bank statement documents are only valid for 6 months from the date written on them and a I-20 is not issued if the date is expired. Always send me an updated bank statement if necessary.
