Industrial Engineering Department Holds Annual Awards Banquet

(April 29, 2009) The UH Department of Industrial Engineering will be honoring alumni, donors, faculty, staff and students at its 2009 Annual Banquet on May 1st. Industrial Engineering alums Carlos de Aldecoa Bueno, Vinod Shah, Randal Sitton and Brazilia Vela-Garcia will be honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards, while Society of Iranian American Women in Education (SIAWE) and Shell US Gas and Power will be presented with the IE Legacy Award.

Industrial Engineering Department Holds Annual Awards Banquet

(May 16, 2008) The UH Department of Industrial Engineering honored alumni, donors, faculty and students at its 2008 Awards Banquet on April 24. Industrial engineering alums Salah Turkmani, Patrick O’ Connor, Rex Walheim and Darshan Singh were honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards, while Brij and Sunita Agrawal, and Hari and Anjali Agrawal were given the IE Legacy Award for each establishing an endowed professorship within the department.

Emeritus Professor, Former IE Chair Passes Away

(May 14, 2008) Scott T. Poage, emeritus professor and former chairman of the University of Houston Department of Industrial Engineering, passed away May 13, 2008 in Waco, Texas at the age of 76. He joined the department in 1968 and established its PhD program. His pioneering work in applications of mathematical optimization techniques in solving industrial engineering problems gained him an international reputation. He was a professional registered engineer in Texas for over 40 years.

Cullen College Delegation Returns from India with Plans for Future Talks

(November 30, 2006) A delegation from the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering recently traveled to India to meet with the administrations of five Indian engineering programs to discuss the implementation of cooperative education programs and research collaborations. While in India, the delegation also had the opportunity to recruit students interested in the college's graduate programs. Associate Dean for Graduate Studies Larry Witte, Electrical and Computer Engineering Chair Haluk Ogmen and Industrial Engineering Chair Hamid Parsaei represented Cullen College on the trip.

Engineering Professor Receives Minority Advancement Award

(June 26, 2006) Hamid Parsaei, professor and chair of industrial engineering with the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, recently received the UPS Award for Minority Advancement from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). The award, which was presented at the group’s Annual Conference in May, is given “for innovative development of programs/ products directed to the advancement of women, minorities or people with disabilities within the field of Industrial Engineering.” Parsaei received the award largely for his efforts to recruit minority students to the Department of Industrial Engineering.

Professor Ronald G. Askin's lecture is scheduled for 10:00 - 11:00am on February 24 (Room 102D, Engineering Building 1, the 1st floor near the lobby). He will talk about "Integrating Worker and Team Considerations into Manufacturing Cell Formation." Dr. Askin is a Professor and Department chair of Industrial Engineering at Arizona State University.

Professor Richard Wysk's lecture is scheduled for 10:00 - 11:00am on April 29 (Room 102D, Engineering Building 1, the 1st floor near the lobby) He will talk about "Rapid Prototyping using CNC machining" Dr. Wysk is a Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University.

Professor Michael Ferris's lecture is scheduled for 10:00 - 11:30am on April 8 (Room 102D, Engineering Building 1, the 1st floor near the lobby) He will talk about "Breast cancer epidemiology: calibrating simulations via optimization." Dr. Ferris is a Professor of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Professor Yin Zhang's lecture is scheduled for 10:00 - 11:30pm on March 11 (Room 102D, Engineering Building 1, the 1st floor near the lobby) He will talk about "Optimization in Action: Helping Treat Cancers." Dr. Zhang is a Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics department at Rice University.

Professor Chip White's lecture is scheduled for 10:00 - 11:30pm on February 25 (Room 102D, Engineering Building 1, 1st floor near the lobby) He will talk about "An Inventory Control Model with Possible Major Disruptions." Dr. White is the ISyE Chaired Professor in Transportation and Logistics at Georgia Institute of Technology.
UH INFORMS student chapter Spring 05 meeting
The meeting was successful. Dr. Niel Biehn from PROS Revenue Management, Inc. gave a talk about OR applications in Revenue Management.
UH Industrial Engineering Alumnus Co-Authors First Book on Retail Consulting
(January 6, 2005) Willard N. Ander (1965 BSIE) recently co-authored a retail-consulting book, Winning at Retail. The book stresses the importance of "being the best at something for a specific segment and not trying to be everything to everyone." Ander, also a former UH assistant professor, is an expert consultant on strategy, new store development, and retail best practices
