Chairman's Message
Hamid R. Parsaei
Hamid R. Parsaei Professor and Chairman
For nearly four years now, it is has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve as the Chair of the University of Houston's Department of Industrial Engineering at the Cullen College of Engineering. During this period, I have witnessed remarkable achievements by faculty, staff and students. The Department has hired a significant number of outstanding new faculty members and more than doubled its graduate and undergraduate enrollments, respectively.

Our vision is to become the top IE program in the state and among the top 10 programs in the country with an international reputation for quality and excellence in research and education. Our goal is to provide outstanding industrial engineering education, research, and economic development services to greater Houston, the State, and the country.

Yearly, the Department revisits its undergraduate and graduate curricula, introducing new courses essential to its mission of training and educating the new generation of industrial engineers. Among the groundbreaking curriculum additions the Department has made over the past 2 years, has been the development and implementation of a new college wide two-course program in Engineering Leadership and Entreprenurism.

Our welcoming and diverse departmental culture has attracted record numbers of women and minority students to both our graduate and our undergraduate programs. Close affiliation of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center-Gulf Coast with the Department of Industrial Engineering has provided a unique opportunity for our students to gain meaningful and rewarding experiences in advanced manufacturing technologies and supply chain management.

Houston is the fourth largest and fastest growing city in the country. Cullen College of Engineering has a strong reputation and rich culture for providing quality engineering programs. These strengths have provided our graduate and undergraduate students with remarkable opportunities for employment both during school years and after graduation.

Our graduate and our undergraduate students have proven themselves to be dynamic both regionally and nationally. The Industrial Engineering Honor Society, Alpha Pi Mu, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) student chapters consistently demonstrate their abilities and desire to set higher standards with regards to academic and professional development. The University of Houston student chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is just the latest achievement of the IE Department's students in their pursuit for higher academic standards.

I am indebted to the IE faculty for their dedication and commitment to the highest academic excellence and to Dr. Raymond W. Flumerfelt, Elizabeth Rockwell Professor and Dean, Cullen College of Engineering, for his continued support of the Department.

As successful as the past four years have been, our next five years will prove even more so. I encourage you to get involved in the Department and share in the building of both yours and the Department's bright future.
