Prospective Graduate Students: Leveling Requirements
Students lacking an undergraduate degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering must show competency in the following four core areas:
- circuit theory
- electronics
- computers, and
- electromagnetics
Competency can be demonstrated by successfully completing, with a B or better, the following courses:
- Circuit Analysis (ECE2300)
- Circuit Analysis Laboratory (ECE2100)
- Analysis I (3337)
- Electronics (ECE3455)
- Digital Logic (ECE3441)
- Microprocessor Systems (ECE4436, knowledge of computer programming is required)
- Applied EM Waves (ECE3317)
All or some of these courses may be waived if the student has completed equivalent coursework as part of her/his undergraduate degree. Waivers can be obtained by supplying appropriate documentation to the Director of Graduate Studies. Examples of appropriate documentation include course catalogue descriptions and course syllabi. Please bring this documentation with you to your meeting with the Director of Graduate Studies!
Leveling courses should be taken as soon as possible, without unduly affecting progress in the graduate degree program. However, if an assigned leveling course is a prerequisite for a graduate course, the leveling course must be completed first. All leveling courses must be completed within the first three semesters of graduate studies. Leveling courses cannot be used to satisfy graduate program requirements.
In summary:
IF your degree is not in electrical and/or computer engineering,
THEN you must complete leveling courses,
UNLESS you prove that you have completed equivalent coursework.
