booksAdvising

Before each registration period, civil and environmental engineering students are required to meet with a faculty member for academic advising. Students are assisted as they plan their course selections for upcoming semesters. Students are responsible for following the degree plan and must meet all pre- and co-requisite course requirements as specified in the undergraduate catalog.

When preparing their long-term course plan, students should be aware that the content and prerequisite requirements for the CIVE 4312 Civil Engineering Design Project are different in fall and spring semesters. Students can choose a structural/geotechnical project (fall semester) or water resources/environmental project (spring semester). Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog for specific prerequisite requirements for CIVE 4312.

The faculty are available by appointment or during posted office hours for general advising. Students who have questions about the curriculum should consult the Department's Undergraduate Administrative Assistant at 713-743-4250. Once advised, a student can enroll in courses at the times designated by the University Enrollment Services.

Please see the Undergraduate Advising Guide for more information.

Academic Audit

What is an Academic Audit?
An Academic Audit is a computerized version of your courses in a degree plan format. The academic audit is a helpful advising tool for undergraduate students. The Academic Audit is not an official document, but it is still a useful tool that gives students an indication of their progress towards their degrees. The Department and College are making every effort to make sure the audits are correct and up-to-date.

How Do You Access the Web Version of the Academic Audit?
Go to University Academic Audit and login using your SSN and pin (same pin used for VIP telephone registration). The Academic Audit may not default to the correct degree plan for your declared major. Choose "Audit Other Majors and Minors" and select "Civil and Environmental Engineering." Then choose the appropriate degree plan (for example 2001-2003 BSCE in Civil Engineering). Then click "Audit Using Selected Major or Minors." Your Academic Audit will be generated and can be printed for future reference.

How Can You Use an Academic Audit?
For unofficial purposes, the Academic Audit may be used to verify your progress towards completing your degree. The Academic Audit is a supplement, not a substitute, for seeing an academic advisor. Running an audit is helpful either prior to your advising session to help focus questions on specific issues, or as a follow-up to advising to make sure you are on track each semester with course selections. Students can use the Audit along with the prerequisite information contained in the undergraduate catalog to select courses for which they meet prerequisites that will count towards their degree. Students who are near graduation should run an audit before the start of their final semester to make sure they are registered in all remaining required courses.

What Should You Do if the Academic Audit Does Not Correctly Count Courses?
If you believe that you have transfer credit for coursework from other schools that is not shown in the proper area of your audit, first check with the Transfer Admission Office (129 E. Cullen) to make sure they have received and evaluated your transcript. Students with International Transfer Evaluations should consult the International Admissions Office and their advisor. Students who believe they have satisfied core requirements, but whose academic audits do not show that the core is fulfilled, should neatly mark up a copy of the Academic Audit to show which courses have not been counted correctly and submit a copy to the undergraduate advisor. Please note that marking up an Academic Audit is not a substitute for filing a petition. Transfer credit for certain courses requires a petition to be considered for inclusion in meeting degree requirements; you must file required petitions for these courses to be counted towards your degree.

Prerequisites
The Academic Audit does not check course prerequisites. Students should make sure that all prerequisites are met before registering in any course. The Department will check and conform all pre- and co-requisite course requirements.
