| The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has always been committed to maintaining a strong curriculum relevant to the practice of civil engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels and environmental engineering at the graduate level.
The Department strives to attract high caliber students and educates them to be productive engineers and responsible citizens in the changing environment of the 21st Century. We are a medium size department in an urban setting located in the fourth largest city in the country.
Motivated faculty, state-of-the-art laboratories, low student/faculty ratio, assistantships, scholarships and the industrial scholar intern program make our department unique nationally. The Department grew rapidly in the 1980s and the graduate research programs in the areas of concrete and steel structures, foundations, grouting, hydraulics and water resources, water and contaminated soil treatment, and rehabilitation of wastewater systems have gained national recognition. With funding from the National Science Foundation the environmental and structural engineering laboratories were upgraded with state-of-the-art equipment during the past ten years. The average annual research expenditure for the Department is over $2.5 million.
