Sixth Annual Engineers Week Event Raises Money for Students, Programs
(February 22, 2010) A UH program, intended to help meet the workforce needs of the energy industry, along with several of its students, last week got a boost from area engineers. Overall, 16 sponsors contributed this year to provide cash awards for students and organizations. But, by far, the largest gift was the Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board’s donation. Its impact for the new program, will no doubt, be significant, said Ramanan Krishnamoorti, chair of the college’s department of chemical and biomolecular engineering where the program is housed.

College Names Outstanding Engineering Students
(February 19, 2010) University of Houston senior Fernando Alquicira and junior Gurwinder Singh last month were named the Cullen College’s Outstanding Students for the 2009-10 academic year. Both Alquicira and Singh were chosen from a pool of 13 students selected from each of the seven programs, and named the outstanding junior and senior for the year. They were honored, along with other outstanding students from the area, at a recognition lunch on the Praireview A&M University campus during National Engineers Week (Feb. 15-21). Alumni Honored During National Engineers Week
(February 18, 2010) Four University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering alumni were among those honored recently by area professional organizations as their 2010 Young Engineers of the Year. The awards, which recognized both outstanding accomplishment and potential in engineers still in the early stages of their careers, were presented during a ceremony at the Intercontinental Houston Hotel Feb. 15 as part of National Engineers Week. One of the seventeen honored was Carol Schmidt (2007 BSChE). Schmidt is a process engineer for Waldemar S. Nelson and Company Inc., where she works on offshore oil and gas platform design projects. Currently an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Schmidt is working toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in 2011. Read More...

BP Annual Gift to Support Wind Lab, Students
(December 14, 2009) As part of an annual contribution to the University of Houston, BP representatives presented a $85,500 check to Dean Joseph Tedesco last week in support of Cullen College of Engineering educational initiatives. The largest portion of the gift will support the college's Wind Energy Undergraduate Laboratory Experiment. BP has committed $50,000 to the UH Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering to construct a wind tunnel for students to learn the fundamentals of converting wind energy to electrical power.
