Engineering Probation—Suspension Policy

University regulations require that a student have a 2.00 cumulative GPA both overall and in major to graduate. To insure that students do not remain deficient in GPA in their major, an Engineering Probation/Suspension system similar to the University's system has been implemented. The system works as follows: if the engineering major GPA drops below 2.25, a message is sent placing the student on Engineering Probation. This means that the student can continue to take Engineering courses, but that if the GPA falls below 2.25 in the student's major courses in the following semester, the student will be placed on Engineering Suspension. Once the student's cumulative major GPA exceeds 2.25, he is removed from Engineering Probation.

Engineering suspension means a student is not allowed to take Engineering courses until readmitted. No student will be readmitted to Engineering following their second suspension. A dean's hold will be placed only to be removed when a change of major from Engineering is completed.

Readmission from Engineering Suspension requires that a student submit a readmission packet. Readmission is approved/disapproved by the Director of Undergraduate Programs.

Explanation of your Engineering Major Status

Engineering Suspension 1
You must apply for readmission from Engineering Suspension with a Statement of Readiness. The readmission form can be found here.
If you are readmitted, you will still be on Engineering Probation. A second Engineering Suspension will require you to change to a major other than Engineering to continue your education at the University of Houston.
Engineering Probation or Continued Engineering Probation
  • Allows you to continue to take Engineering courses; however, you must achieve the required major GPA or better in major courses taken during the current semester and the semesters that follow.
  • You must achieve the required major GPA in all courses attempted in your major to be removed from Engineering probation.
  • Failure to do so will result in you being placed on Engineering suspension.
  • You will remain on engineering probation in Engineering until one of the following occurs:
    1. You raise your cumulative major GPA to the required major GPA or better
    2. You change your major out of Engineering
Dean's Hold
Your major GPA is below the college requirement to continue enrollment as engineering major; you must petition to continue or change major to enroll. A second Engineering Suspension will require you to change to a major other than Engineering to continue your education at the University of Houston.

After the posting of grades each semester, the College of Engineering will review the major GPA status of all engineering students.

Students are responsible for monitoring both their UH cumulative GPA and engineering cumulative major GPA and to take appropriate action by published deadlines and policies.
