Engineering Admissions Requirements

Admission Requirements for the Cullen College of Engineering are higher than those for the University of Houston in general. The table shows admission criteria for the College.

*The SAT scores are for tests taken after March 1995. Tests taken before April 1995 are scored differently. If you have taken more than one exam, the university will use the best total or composite score from a single test date.

Engineering majors should have the high school credits listed in the table below upon admission to the University of Houston:

Mathematics (including two units/credits in algebra, one in geometry, and one-half in either elementary analysis or analytical geometry) 4
*Required for civil and mechanical engineering majors. A deficiency in this area may be made up during the first year at the University of Houston.

Engineering majors are encouraged to take the Cullen College of Engineering advanced placement and/or achievement tests in American history, chemistry, and English prior to admission. Course work in these areas will be waived with appropriate scores.

Engineering Admissions Policies and Information

Recent High School Graduates
If you are a recent high school graduate of a U.S. accredited high school, or if you have earned fewer than 15 semester hours of credit from an accredited college, you will be classified as a new freshman and must meet specific entrance requirements:

TSI -- The Texas Success Initiative and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (formerly TASP)

International students are eligible for admission with the completion of the equivalent of 12 years of U.S. elementary and secondary schooling. Admission is based on academic performance in all courses and a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL. Proof of adequate financial support is required. International transfer students who have completed less than one year of full-time university level study must meet the requirements for high school graduates.

Transfer Students
Transfer students who have earned fewer than 15 semester hours of college credit must meet the engineering requirements for high school graduates. Applicants who have more than 15 credit hours must have all the following:

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Cullen College of Engineering is committed to recognizing and encouraging academic excellence through a substantial undergraduate scholarship program. Scholarships range from $500 to $4,000 a year and many are renewable yearly based on academic performance.

Freshman & Transfer Orientation
Once admission to the university has been granted, the next step is to attend an orientation conference. The university holds orientation sessions throughout the year, including the summer. These conferences address important issues that affect all incoming students and we encourage you to attend.

Engineering Date and Times

Students may access the Dean of Students and register for an Orientation Conference by printing a reservation form, completing and faxing to the Dean of Students' Office. Students may also contact the Dean of Students' Office at 713-743-5475 for New Student Orientation registration information.

All new students should attend New Student Orientation. At Orientation:

  • TSI status is established
  • Freshman Advising Stops are cleared.
  • Overview of UH
    - Campus tour
    - UH administrator welcome
    - University Service Presentation
    Core curriculum information, meet with their college/department advisors, and register for their courses. The information received at Orientation is critical to student success.

  • Advising and Registration
  • Scholarships and Financial Aid
  • Residency Hall Tours

Course Placement Examinations
Placement in English, mathematics and reading courses will be determined by students' scores on SAT/ACT or internal UH placement tests. There is a placement test fee of $5 for each subject test. Students must present a photo ID (e.g., Texas driver's license) when taking the test. For further information about these or any other testing programs, including current fees for various tests, contact the University Testing Services, 204 Student Services Center, 713-743-5444.

Mathematics Placement
Engineering Majors must take the mathematics placement examination before enrolling in their first math course at the University of Houston. Students will not need to take the placement examination if they have received transfer credit for MATH 1431. View a sample Math Placement Test (pdf)
